Hi there, we recently bought a tent to start our camping adventures & we want to go away next weekend as the weathers looking good for our first ever pitch - is there a way of finding available pitches at the last minute?!
Any tips about booking pitches for a newbie would be very much appreciated too :)
Thanks

Might be less easy in Essex, but we never book, we just turn up at midday as people are leaving If the site is full, move on... We print off the map from UKCS which shows the sites that suit us (e.g. have loos etc) in case that happens. What's the worst that can happen? You have a day trip & come home. (You did say you wanted some adventure...)
I rarely book until a day or two before I want to go, mainly because I am able to go pretty much any time and can choose the good weather. I telephone the site I want to go to and book over the phone. Very occasionally in the middle of the high season I might have to phone a couple of sites to find a vacant pitch, although I tend not to go when the kids are off school anyway.
Camping has become very popular over the last few years and whereas I would once point the car and see where I ended up I now don't take that chance, and book first.
Out of season most campsites have vacancies so it is then not so important to book first.

Thanks guys 👍
I'm one of those annoying people that have to plan everything & write lists etc so I just have to know where I'm going haha! Called round a few sites today & managed to get a couple of nights next weekend 😊 we are staying in Essex (about an hours drive away), didn't want to go too far for our first practice run lol!!
We have one more thing to buy & I just can't make a decision - a tent light!! Anyone know of a good bright one that will light our family tent? Either mains operated or rechargeable please!
RE: lighting, there was a recent thread about mains lights which might help. When off EHU we use Black Diamond Voyager lanterns. They have a 'torch' LED in the base so they shed ambient light and task / reading light at the same time - perfect in a tent. They take AA batteries so you can stick rechargeables in if that'd fit your spec.
I use an ordinary table or bedside lamp with an energy saver bulb. I may change that for a LED bulb as they don't need to warm up before reaching full power. You could have a couple of them in a large tent.
I then use a battery lantern for the bedroom but I don't think they make the one I have any more now that LED lanterns have become popular so I can't advise on those.

Thanks for that link to the thread! Think I will try the Outwell castor light & see how we go. I've bought the kids a torch each so they are ok, it's just something for the main living area!
