A word of warning: check if you can take dogs to Portmeirion.
I've been twice, admittedly many years ago, and dogs weren't allowed in Portmeirion itself.

It is amazing though.
A friend and I went and stayed in a cottage there about 20 years ago. It is every bit as surreal and beautiful as you might imagine.
There are some wonderful trompe l'oeil paintings, too, including a mural of a window in the flank wall in a building that really catches you out.

Why does having a dog stop you going to Portmerion? We've had dogs on & off for over 30 years, the dog stays in the car / MH if we want to go round a National Trust house or English Heritage / Historic Scotland castle or a "yellow book" NGS or SGS garden open for charity. Obviously not if it's really hot & sunny, but then you'd check him/her into local doggy daycare aka kennels; however, we've always found somewhere under a tree, left the MH vent & windows open, water out, and the dog has never ever been distressed. You can't let a dog rule your life.... They sleep overnight on their own, so they can be on their own for 8 hours now & then for a special specific reason, your visit to Portmerion won't take that long. You could always come out of Portmerion to give the dog a comfort break after a few hours and then go back in.

That's what I did when I went to Portmeirion. There are plenty of very tall trees round the edges of the car park which give lots of shade so I parked there, went into Portmeirion then went back to check on the dogs a couple of times and they were fine. All I had to do when going out was get my hand stamped to allow re-entry.

Yes, it must be good having a dog that you can leave! My one dog is totally deaf, and has been since birth- (we didn't know at the time). I did think of returning her, but after eight weeks, when we did realize she was deaf - it was too late, we had fallen in love with her!- as you do.
I could give you chapter and verse of the first few weeks we had her, but suffice to say, she will not be left alone, and needs the comfort of our presence, so she and the other one ( who did sleep downstairs initially) - come to bed with me. Yes, I know they shouldn't, but hey ho.
The upside of that, is hubby is in spare bedroom, and I am not tortured by his snoring !! The downside, is my husband has totally spoiled both of the dogs, which I totally disagree with, but I am fighting a losing battle
I must admit, that at times I wish that we had not kept her. That was four plus years ago and it is something that we have learnt to live with. She is adorable and she loves people - she thinks that folk were put on this earth to make a fuss of her, which most do.
Anyway, yes, we do let the dogs rule our lives somewhat, but the pleasure they give us, outweighs all.

Bodnant is beautiful but I'm not sure it compares to Portmeirion does it? Portmeirion, in my humble opinion, is hideous and run down.

I am glad I am not the only one that thinks that!
I must admit I was soooo disappointed with Portmeirion. I wanted to go for years and none of the kids wanted to so I had to wait to move up here to do a day trip with the new BF at the time (he is my hubby now).
I thought it was overpriced to get in and overpriced once in there. I have only returned once and that was to do the first trail run in April 2014. I would not go again if it was free entry.
It is hyped up to be something that it is not in my eyes - it needs a lick of paint in places and prices to come down.
