Have a look at Bala lake in North Wales. We were staying just south of there and saw at least 2 campsites from our trip on the Bala lake narrow gauge railway, right on the lakeside. There were hardy folk in the water and using kayaks.
Do not swim in Loch Morlich (Aviemore), we hired canoes and were warned that the water is the same temperature as the sea around Iceland. And sadly there are deaths when people swim in Loch Lomond in summer (or the boat capsizes & they don't have floatation jackets). They both have great camp sites on their shores, the scenery is beautiful, but the water is very deep and it never warms up. Hope you find somewhere for your wild swimming.
The I believe the COTSWOLD LAKES CAMPING -http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=12723, is near the Cotswold Country Park http://cotswoldcountrypark.co.uk, which does open swimming for alot of the year.
------------- 2015 sites booked so far: Cotswold Farm Park, Ninham IOW, still some more to book
Thanks so much for the replies, have had a lovely time looking!
Stowford looks a good possibility and it's an area we've not been to which is a bonus. I also like the look of Dol Llys, but as a base camp, it's quite far to travel to places we'd be interesting in visiting... but then if the campsite is lovely we rarely get away as much as we think we do!
Barefoot is lovely but doesn't accept trailer tents. Have earmarked that for a possible weekend with our small tent. I wasn't sure about the Cotswold lakes as their website doesn't give much away about the swimming access (or indeed very much else either).
Bosworth water is a bit too close for a week's holiday, plus there are a number of reviews which are disappointing (the main thing that put me off were keycoded loos- had that once in London and they were a right pain!) But I think I'll visit next year for a day and see if I can looksee the camping field then- if it's not so bad I may do a weekend there.
Thanks for the heads up about lochs, I would love to visit Scotland one day even without a swim.
Loch Lomond is fine for swimming ,try it swam last year lovely, four winds near March ,river nene very clean,st Neots ,river Ouse ,same,,good thread ,any more recommendations keep them coming, also Wallingford on the Thames .
Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!
