We are planning our next trip and we are thinking about trying south east Scotland and we're wondering if anybody has got any good recommendations for us to try

Surprised you've not had loads of ideas. Touring or based in one central location? How long - a weekend, a fortnight? Children? Dog?
If touring, potter up round the coast via Dunbar & North Berwick (East Lothian is the place to golf, if you do that) and Haddington, as far as Edinburgh, then go back roughly along the route of the newly reopened Waverley train line to see the towns associated with the various Border Ridings - they're all different, all worth a morning or afternoon. (Selkirk, Melrose, Jedburgh, Kelso etc). Abbeys everywhere - if you're in English Heritage, you'll get in free (or half price if it's your first year). Or join Historic Scotland up here. Edinburgh Castle alone makes it worth being a member. It'll then be half price entry in England for the first year.
So - your question was a wee bit too open ended, tell us what you enjoy doing & I'm sure there'll be lots more ideas.
Well done for spotting that Scotland has a South-East!
I've recently done a 'mini-tour' round the southern part of Scotland and thoroughly enjoyed it. OK, I'm the only person in the world who didn't like Melrose, but that's a personal thing.
I'd recommend Dalbeatie which has two sites (one in town) and the excellent Glenearly site a few minutes walk away.
You might also like to visit Beeswing and the Loch Arthur community.
As Fiona suggested, potter up the East coast to Edinburgh. I recommend the Linwater site outside East Calder. There's a Park&ride on the way into the city. There are pubs and eateries in East Calder and a few miles away in West Calder.
North of Edinburgh, Head along the coast to places like Crail (with the secret nuclear bunker - a must see) and up to St.Andrews.
You could then head West to Perth & Stirling before heading back south. (Don't forget to see the Falkirk wheel and have a boat trip)

Dalbeattie & Beeswing can wait for the trip round South West Scotland where there's lots to see & do. West of the M74, roughly speaking, you're out of The Borders, there's a different "feel".
Anyway, OP might only have a weekend!

Thanks for your replies we will be going for at least a week and we like generally being out and about doing houses/ castles and also shortish strolls
