Dear campers,
My partner and I are looking for an affordable holiday destination. We live in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and are thinking about going to Harwich by ferry this August.
From there, we would like to go "somewhere" by train and stay in our tent for a few nights, maybe a week.
I am wondering if anyone could advise us on a cool place to go - we are city people but nature lovers, young people but "old hippies" on the inside.. we are clueless about our holiday, first time we "have to" go in the high season.. (since we dislike flying and "extremely warm weather" as well as crowded holiday resorts)
Does somebody know a good city/village? -live music, close to seaside or lake, skateboard spot? Would be very appreciated!
ps. I already did quite some research on this great site (love the clear old school layout and the absence of commercials!), but there is so many options.. still busy searching.. your country is quite large ;) and we dont know much of it yet..

How about The Lake District. Keswick would be a good place. Its beautiful and plenty of pubs and places to eat though you would have to book very soon. All August in uk is school hols.
Harwich to Cambridge is two hours by train, even though you have to change trains on the way. Then taxi from Cambridge station to Highfield farm campsite at Comberton on the west side of the city. Reviews and website are on here already. Rent bikes to get into the city and around country villages while you are there. The land is flat.
The trains go inland from there. You could maybe take buses north up the coast, really pretty villages, great bird watching, good beer. A bit like where you come from though.
Nothing hilly within 2 hours. But the Cambridge suggestion is realistic.
I think the idea is a great one.
There are ferries to north England for your next visit. What a pity the ferry to Rosyth has stopped.

...but would take a lot longer than 3 hours to get there, unfortunately.
The Lake District is a long way from harwich . Most of the trains from harwich go to London first . So then you can decide . Where you would like to go . The south coast the weather is in my opinion better or I love the Cotswolds . Quite a large area but some nice places to see . .
Would you have bikes with you . Or just backpacking .
I live in Wales . And it is also very nice. But again a long way from harwich .
I think look at the Cotswolds on the internet and see what you think . It is quite central .
My son Lives near Amsterdam . He keeps saying he would like to go to north Wales . We never took him there when he was young . We always went to Cornwall . Again a great place with lots to see and do . .But a long way from harwich . Cornwall is popular with all ages . Beautiful coast .
Good luck with your search .

York is lovely but unfortunately too far away. I agree with others that Cambridge is probably your best bet. It's a beautiful city, lots going on and you can cycle most places.
You have to catch the Mayflower Line train from Harwich and change at Manningtree to go either down to London or up to Ispwich and Norwich. Or the Cambridge option. It's always a good idea to get a map out and search for places with websites to find out what's going on - there's a lot more going on than one often thinks, plus you can find out about bike/car hire and other facilities. Not dissing any site because their information is usually very good on their websites but expanding your search can often make a difference, dependant on your personal preferences.

Thank you so much for all advices - after weeks of research we finally decided to go to Brighton - a bit more far away from Harwich than we thought we would go. Found a campsite that will most likely take us without booking in advance - Buckle Holiday Park in Seaford, which is affordable and right at the beach. Cant wait to go!
