Thats not so good you had a couple of issues in the past bnmuk. Unfortunately as the OP has proved rightly or wrongly, there is still an issue with some sites.

I don't own a Hobby van but the OP is a Hobby owner and as he stated , he is having the same problems you have had.

I don't think 2 sites in 7 years is much of a problem,we go away for around 100 nights every year, and to be refused twice in 7 years isn't a reason for not buying one.

Fair point and glad its not been a big issue but there are quite a few sites in the UK that do not accept Hobby and other large German vans for the reasons I mentioned in my other post.
I suppose a lot could depend on the area you want ot visit?

Apart from being discriminatory, banning Hobbies is also pretty stupid - some travellers have Hobbies, but lots have other makes of caravan, including Bailey, Elddis etc, so perhaps all caravans should be banned!!

Pitch it in a lay-by and save on the fees. Better still on a school playing field. You’ll easily get 4 days gratis before being moved on. You might even make some new friends!

Some friends have just purchased a Buccanner which is 8ft wide - very smart indeed when we looked round it for the first time at the weekend, but noticeably larger than most. Would they have a similar problem? They will mostly be using it at horse shows so I don't think they are too worried, but worth knowing if there is an issue will all wide caravans or if it is just the Hobby brans

It's got nothing to do with width.

this kind of discrimination against hobby, tabbert and LMC owners is unfortunately not an urban myth.

the site owners are not allowed to dicriminate against travellers as a group but can make their own bylaws about the door side, the make, the towing vehicle. i have seen many that state no commercial or sign written vehicles.

however, i have seen plenty of hobby caravans at uk sites i have visited. and as i do in french campsites the owners must park the caravan nose in to allow the awning to be on the correct side.

i shouldnt let it put you off coming to the uk though but if i were you though there are plenty of better places in europe to visit than the uk and there are plenty of nicer places in the uk to visit than Brean. its ok for a weekend away thats only a 3 hour drive but its very tidal and at the end of an estuary some times the sea is 2 miles away and cannot be seen. i have never been to 'unity' but i understand its a very large site with commercialized facilities as are many in that area. of the whole of the uk you may like to visit somehere more scenic such as Cornwall or Devon. what kind of facilities do you want? what kind of landscape etc... maybe we can offer some help. i visit a small site near watchet somerset for short breaks thats very nice and they are very accommodating.

Admittedly, I've only done a tad over a dozen weeks (in total) camping on French sites... around 17 different sites, off the top of my head... and I have yet to witness any form of uniformity whatsoever, when it comes to pitching/positions within the pitch... Tent's facing forward for the nosy ones (us!), and facing the back of the pitch for those requiring more privacy. Caravans and motorhomes parked forwards, reversed, and even across the width, with awnings left, right, front or rear.

I'd absolutely hate the regimented set up I've read about on here more than once, where everything runs in symmetry!

Not just narrow minded but downright divisive. Stereotyping people merely due to their appearance is really not acceptable in the modern world. At this time we find people trying to arrange holidays and are happy to pay way over the odds to obtain a caravan. The brand you describe is the largest manufacturer in Europe and subsequently has more caravans on the road in Europe. The build an excellent product and offer amazing value for money. To refuse you merely because an undesirable element like that brand is a disgrace. They do know that terrorists drive mercedes and Toyota don't they ? Does that exclude these excellent cars as tow vehicles ?

We have had a tag-axle Hobby motorhome since 2008 and have never been refused in the UK. We travel to France, or did pre-COVID, three or four times a year and only once was refused entry into a campsite although some of them had signs saying no “double-essieux” vehicles allowed but that referred to caravans. Even with that sign outside we were always let in.

Opps just seen the last post.

I think the caravans are declined because the door is on the wrong side and it has nothing to do with Travellers. Travellers use all sorts of caravans, quite often Baileys - lol.

Not such a problem on a campsite with grass pitches but on a hardstanding with a grassed area, having the door on the wrong side means that occupiers will be stepping out onto their neighbours grassed area, and erecting awnings may be difficult. They could of course solve the problem by allowing a foreign made caravan to park the other way round but I guess some campsite owners can't see past their own rules.

Strangely enough, I saw about a dozen caravans, mainly Hobby`s, on a lorry park just off the A370 approaching Weston-Super-Mare a few weeks ago. I`m wondering now if the OP was amongst them ? If so, I`m glad he found somewhere to park up.
