We doing NC500 next July/aug with a mixture of tent, pod & B&B. We a couple in 50s with wee dog. I’m currently looking for recommendations for 4 nights around Dunnet Bay. Want to use it as base for area as really don’t want to put up tent for single nights. I’ve read reviews of Dunnet Bay , Thurso Bay & Wick. Very mixed. Any recommendations? We just want flat pitch with good clean showers & ehu.

There is a CS at Murkle called Ivy Cottage, you would need to be a member of the Camping and Caravanning Club to use it. Takes tents, has facilities, not been there yet. £20 which is cheaper than all the others.
The last time I stayed on the Dunnet bay CMC site, it had tents on it. If you're in that area, I'd recommend visiting the late Queen Mother's home, the Castle of Mey.

I’m not a member but some CAMC sites appear to take tents but only if you’ve arrived under your own steam - walking or bicycle. Worth phoning if the site is of interest.
Not that many sites up there, we found that the right location usually outweighed any negatives.
We have booked Dunnet Bay. We doing the route anti clockwise so now got the last 5 nights to plan. Hoping fir sun this time. Last 3 trips to Scotland has been in monsoon type weather. Only week in Arran has been sunshine.
We didn’t book any sites when we did the NC500. It meant we could move on if we didn’t fancy stopping yet (or the weather was duff) or stay longer if we particularly enjoyed somewhere (or the weather was good).
The route has got more popular & I don’t know if booking is more advisable now, but most sites do have a high turnover. We did turn up soon after lunch if we were set on a particular site - the Poolewe one (C&CC) was full by late afternoon in high summer.
Sorry you’ve had so much poor weather- May & September are particularly known for better weather. I’ve got badly sunburnt in May, on Skye & on Arran. And there’s often a huge difference between east & west coast weather. I hope you catch the good stuff on this trip.
