Hi everyone
We're hiring a motorhome for the first time this summer and I just wanted some advice on where it's ok to stop overnight if you can't find a site. Obviously we'll avoid places that say "no overnight camping/parking" but do you have any tips on places to look for that you can safely stop overnight without getting any trouble.
We're going on a road trip round Wales so thinking there will be plenty of quiet country road with laybys or empty beach car parks.
All tips gratefully received
Cheers

I am sorry, but you have not chosen the best place in the UK for a M.H. This year Wales is a no go area. There is no right to stay overnight in any 'spot' in any part of UK. The police in Wales have said that they will not allow this type of thing. Expect big fines if you try it they said. Just because there is no sign saying do not park, it does not mean that you can.
When they made the statement early March, they were turning MH away, with fines to boot. (as were Devon and Cornwall) Call the Wales Tourist Board, they will put you right.
Your Hire Company should know this. You say "without getting any trouble", unfortunately it is you who will cause the trouble, according to the people who live where you chose to stop.
I don't honestly think that any other area will welcome somebody who is not prepared to pay a fee to stop where they feel they would like to be. Wild Camping (so called by many) is not available this year it seems.

I'd recommend that you get a good campsite guide or have a good look through the campsite search in this forum. Phone ahead and check for site availability. There are also pubs etc that will allow customers to stop overnight in their carpark.

If this is your first time, it may be useful to be able call on others for help if needed. And do take heed of the advice that you just can't park anywhere you like. A lot of people in Scotland have ended up with fines and cautions.

Wales in general is a no go for overnight stops, however I believe you can still stay in most car parks in Powys 1 night in 7

Just to be clear - we've already got campsites booked for most of our nights so this was very much a "what if" post not someone trying to flout any rules or break any laws. Thanks for responses so far.

Not had a motorhome for 5 years but motorway services could be used as stopovers if you paid.

Cardigan car park normally 8.50 for overnight campervans free at present as machines shut to stop people transfering virous, new quay campervans and small motorhomes 8.50 a night has car park attendants, Aberystwyth car parks free same reason as cardigan some MH parking overnight in one of the carparks nearest harbour. most car parks are very clearly signed on what is and isnt allowed all locals very friendly as long as you obey the rules and show them the respect that you yourself expects

romany aberystwyth, do not expect to park up on the streets over night the local council/police are clamping down, even car parks could be a no go area for motorhomes overnight, one motorhome in snowdonia was towed away for breaking the parking restictions,   the laybys in gwynedd are getting used alot for motorhomes parking over night even seen a large tent on one. it is safer to prebook up front campsites. also if hiring a motorhome remember if it does'nt fit in a single parking bay P&D then you need two pickets. or get a fine.
