Travelling to Port Ban when lockdown lifts. Would appreciate advice on best route on B class road (north or south) to take . I now drive a 6m motorhome. Thanks everyone and keep safe.
Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!
Years since I was at that site, beautiful sunset views of Jura.
I'd suggest a loop - one way main road, other way ferries, don't do the ferry route on Sunday as you'll be waiting longer.
1. Ferry route. Western Ferries ro-ro from Greenock to Kirn (Dunoon), no booking. Drive over through Cowal to Portavadie (slow road - I won't detail every junction, Google Maps will show you). I love the section around the head of Loch Striven. CalMac ferry from Portavadie (just beyond a smart new hotel) to Tarbert - again, no booking, but this a smaller ro-ro. A83 south just out of town, turn right past the golf course, join the B8024 and drive round the coast to reach the site from the south: take this road cautiously, it has tight bends and some short steep sections, and is a National Cycle Route.
2. Main roads - A83 up Loch Lomond, over the Rest & Be Thankful (or the Old Military Road if it's closed by a landslip again) and follow that A83 through Inveraray, Lochgilphead and down Loch Fyne. Turn right a bit after Ardrishaig, onto the other end of the B8024, to reach the site from the north.
3. A good compromise route would be the Western Ferries over the Clyde but continue north on the A815 past Loch Eck to join the A83 beyond / west of The Rest.
You'll have read the site reviews, but I'd suggest taking what food & drink you need for starting as I can't remember how good the shop is at the site. The nearest supermarket is a Co-op at Lochgilphead. The Kilberry Inn down the road has won awards, its website is a good source of information about what to do locally.
Hope that helps.
Fiona, you beat me to it - saving me a lot of typing with strapped up fingers! But I'm confused, I thought Port Ban was south of Tarbert on A83? Otherwise love route 2.
Western Ferries - buy your ticket in advance or locally - far cheaper than onboard; last time I took the car over the difference was around £7.

Ficklejade, Port Ban is at Kilberry. Yes, head south from Tarbert but only over the hill, not as far as West Loch Tarbert.
I’ve heard about getting Western Ferries tickets in advance - we’re usually going over to Benmore Gardens on the spur of the moment when the rhodies are flowering. But thanks for the reminder!
Spoken to friend in Dunoon and if you're over 5m you need to contact Western Ferries as you could be considered commercial. There are ways around this (or maybe it's because he goes over the water regularly) but he suggests you try officially to find out first without booking. Also, the local purchase of tickets is getting tighter as WF want you to get two tickets!
Same chap has been surveying the roads around Cowal and up to Strachur for another purpose and you shouldn't have an issue in 6m m/h on Fiona's route.

Thank you for your response. I am grateful for people like yourselves for taking the time to help out. Let's hope that all these lockdown restrictions are lifted so that we can all get back to exploring our beautiful country. Take care.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
