I'm trying to locate a campsite in the Birmingham area for the 1st week of August for the Commonwealth Games.
Anyone else heading there?
Any thoughts on where we might locate our small campervan for the week?
There is precious little, and any talk of pop-up urban sites has fizzled out as we approach the time. Very disappointing, as we are camping whatever happens, and don't want a daily long commute, via public transport(!) to Perry Barr and the NEC.
Any thoughts would be welcome, CL's near Coleshill are our current best bet....
Thanks.
Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!
have you looked in the camp site search at the top of this page? i have checked within 5 miles and there are 9 sites, the closest being just under 2 miles away
There’s a comment on the CAMC website which came up when I googled, it’s dated 25/7/21 and says: “You can now apply for tickets for the commonwealth games in Birmingham next year at Birmingham2022.com and the nearest club site is at Chapel lane just off Jnc 3 M42 .”

Which site was under 2 miles away. The closest I found is The Paddock near Aldridge
Might depend which venue you’re going to. The official website says: “The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games is a West Midlands Celebration with Birmingham at its heart. The venues being used for the Games stretch from Coventry, Solihull, and Royal Leamington Spa to Cannock Chase Forest, Royal Sutton Coldfield, and Wolverhampton.”

I didn't find any sites that were nearer than Coleshill, south of Sutton Colefield, east of the city.
The best of these was a Caravan Club CL, and none of them were near public transport. I had been looking for 9 months, and had spoken to 2 councils, a newspaper, and anyone I could think of, to try to find out where the promised Games Camping /Glamping would be(Sandwell had been proposed).
It is not going to be possible to camp and access public transport to and from the venues.
I was so disappointed as I had spent most of the holiday budget on tickets, and an unexpected expensive weekend in London, as we were successful in the velodrome ticket ballot, which is at the Olympic Park in London!
We have had to book a fleapit hotel nr New St, as even Travelodges are 250 a night for the Games week.
We will now take advantage of the free public transport that comes with every ticket bought.
We will now be doing the whole Lancashire to London, and then up to Birmingham, and back, on the train, which we are looking forward to, if I can find Advance tickets.
I was really looking forward to camping, but the plans to include camping and glamping in the Games accommodation options have been abandoned.
Good luck in your search.
Seems implausible but the Malvern area is promoting itself as somewhere to stay, as there’s a direct train line to Birmingham, takes an hour. https://www.visitthemalverns.org/blog/stay-in-the-malverns-for-the-2022-commonwealth-games/
Has campsites.
That suggests looking at the rail network might work (not necessarily in that direction), rather than local buses.
doing a search in the tamworth area, on here there are 32 sites to choose from, ok some require you to be a member of either of the clubs but there are a lot that dont
There are trains to Birmingham regularly from Shrewsbury via Wellington and Telford. Morris Leisure have a site on the outskirts of Shrewsbury by the Park and Ride. The bus drops you at the town centre bus station which is a short walk to the rail station.
Probably 45 minutes to Birmingham on the faster trains, some stop at every station others don't.
I would imagine there will be buses to the venues or maybe the Metro.

Kingsbury CCC site is about 15 mins drive from the NEC - if it’s a small campervan I would think you’ll be able to drive in and park. Otherwise taxi might not be too much? Alexandra Stadium a bit further but easy to access via M42/M6. Might be worth ringing the site to see if they have any info about public transport - the wardens are lovely people!
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
