This a legal problem and probable well beyond the scope of amateur advice to give you definitive answers.

Possibly a lot hinging on the terms of the contract you entered into as to duration/termination/renewal of agreement.

If you have the records you say you have, that looks promising, send a bundle of document copies (keep originals safe and don't surrender to new site owners under any circumstances, give them Certified Copies if they get awkward about authenticity!) and covering letter to them to justify your position.

Bad bookkeeping by previous owner may have repercussions for you, but is really the new owner's problem and their due diligence on checking the business before takeover.

If that does not resolve the issue, then suggest Citizens Advice is probably your next option, they'll explain your legal standing and IIRC give basic initial legal advice.

Have the new owners only bought the site or the business. If only bought the site you need to chase previous owner for £1705.

Did you pay by credit card? If so, the credit card company need to be approached.

Another suggestion would be to contact Which Legal Services for advice. In addition there should be some record of how the transaction payment was done unless you handed it over in cash.

Does your home insurance include a legal advice line? If so it might be worth giving them a call.

Could be debit, credit or prepayment card all of which there should be a record i.e. statement somewhere.

Was payment made in the name of the caravan site or the previous owners name,as this may have bearing on the claim.
