Hi, our grandkids (15 + 10) want to come camping with us. Real camping. They don't want to come to the caravan and they don't want to go glamping despite my best persuasive skills. So we've looked out the camping gear (thought we were past all that) and im now looking for a campsite to go to. In the past we took them to sites with some facilities/activities. I've got them to accept a toilet and tap is essential (grandson was all for taking a shovel lol). Can anyone recommend a back to basic campsite, preferably a couple of hours any direction of Glasgow. Good walks, nature(y) things would be good too and a good place for the kids. Big ask. Thanks in advance.

My favourite recommendation is Red Bank Farm at Bolton le Sands, probably about 3 hours from Glasgow, but it's just off the M6. Listed on here, there's a field of non EHU. It's a working farm on the shore of Morecambe Bay and relatively unspoilt. Not too far from civilisation though if you fancy a change.

Thanks. I'll have a look.

Thomaston Farm CS, across the road from Culzean castle NTS, not far south of Ayr. (So there’s entertainment not far away if you need it.) Small. Farm. Great westward views for you, clean but basic toilet & shower for a feel of real camping.
Or Beecraigs, south of Linlithgow. It’s council owned & well run, with a field for tents with one of the best toilet / shower blocks that I know. And a café in the visitor centre if you need it plus play areas dotted around. And for you: views east to Berwick Law & west to Arran, if you keep walking on the paths uphill.

Thanks Fiona. A lovely wee site. But a bit too local for me (though I have camped there with friends in the past). We go that way often to Culzean with the kids.

Or my favourite: Drumroamin, south of Newton Stewart. Scores 10/10, all grass, absolutely quiet, red kites overhead, horses looking over the hedge. Small site, but areas to run around, giant Jenga outside / play room for if it’s raining. Relaxed owner who keeps the facilities immaculate.
