The only campsite we've ever stayed in is Coopers in Edale.

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=2997

We found it fine, it's got a beautiful backdrop, and right near 2 pubs.  And only a short walk from the station.  There is another one on the opposite side of the road, a little nearer to the station.

Sorry, can't help with North West!

Actually, I've just looked on my Ordnance Survey CD and I can help but I'll need more details of the area you want to go to.  Unfortunately I can't copy the maps!

The campsite at the outdoor centre in Edale gets full up sometimes but id imagine Coopers (5 min walk up hill from station) in Edale should be able to make space for people without a car assuming you arent taking a marquee or something - although Id ring before I set off to check.

Carnforth.....Get the train to Carnforth and you should be able to catch a bus towards Morecambe, this goes thru Bolton le Sands which is littered with Campsites. Red Bank farm has a good reputation, all I can think of of the top of my head.

I am currently not running a car, so all my camping is done by public transport. It depends on what you expect on the campsite (I prefer just the essential amenities such as toilet and water) but Gibraltar Farm at Silverdale has a "wild camping" feel to it, is cheap - £5 per night for backpacking - is within ten minutes walk of the pubs and the Silverdale Shuttle minibus service runs almost up to the site gate and meets with every single train that stops at Silverdale, as the station is quite a way outside the village.

I don't know the North West, but I have no car either and go everywhere by train, bus or on foot.  I know a few site in other areas if your interested (mainly SW) there is also a previous thread I started about the same subject:
