My husband would like to know if anybody knows where the fossil beach in south west (Dorset?) is and what it is called. He thinks you can hire bucket and chisel to dig with. Does anybody out there know where he's talking about.

Charmouth the eastern side of Lyme Regis is the place your looking for, I dont know about tool hire but you can just scrape fossils out of the cliff face.

Go onto the beach at Charmouth from the car park turn left and walk along the bottom of the cliff ...you will find rocks that look like soft slate that have fallen from the cliff face, Small hammer and a bolster type chisel will very easily split them .......you will see the fossils .......if you are lucky.....kept my kids happy for a while and we always found somthing .......now grown up with kids if their own only old fossil about now is me !

Be carefull when removing fossils from cliff faces. Until the fossil has fallen from the cliff it's the property of the land owner. It's also considered anti-ecological as your speeding coastal erosion up.
Sounds a little nanny state but living on the isle of wight it's how the law lays in these parts.
Thanks to you all and dont worry we will be careful. I dont plan to chop down masses of coastline. We'll just be picking up the odd fossil we see lying around.
