Skye is a fantastic place to visit at any time of the year.
Can't comment about the midges, but as far as what to do, I would suggest walk, walk and walk, the scenery is staggering! The whisky is superb, so yes, I would book a distillery visit, and try to visit Dunvegan Castle - where Bonnie Prince Charlie and Flora McDonald got it together.
Weather wise, it can (and does) ps it down at all times of the year, but don't let that put you off. Even when it's coming down in lumps, the place is quite spectacular. I recall once driving round a headland in the heaviest rainstorm I have ever encountered, the sky was BLACK (not grey, black!!) and the water in the sea loch below was the most perfect shimmering turquise I have ever seen - bizzare and breathtaking!
Had 8 nights camping there 2 years ago, nearly went back this year with the caravan, maybe next year. We stayed at a nice quiet site at Edinbaine called Loch Greshonish, check out the reviews also their website. Order your fresh home bake bread buns and get them hot for breakfast the next day, a nice shop with a selection of beers and wines. Nice friendly owner`s, if we go back next year this is the site we will deffo go to.
Find a pub with a Celidh, you'll have a great time, the locals are happy to teach you the dances if you don't know them.
You must go up to the Coral Beach, it's lovely, if you're going to the Talisker Distillery call in at Carbost Pottery, it's really nice and very unusual, situated on a lane just above the entrance to the distillery.
The Otter Hide at Kylerhea is a must too, nothing better than observing the otters in the wild swimming and catching fish.......if you arrive via the little ferry, the hide is in the right as you come up the hill.
Enjoy your holiday, Skye is a magical place - I wish I was coming with you.
Watch out for the Police with the hand held speed radar gun.I never went over any speed limits (well just a little) because we wanted to enjoy the scenery, I saw one on most days out but I think they were more interested in the motor bikes.
My big sis has just been there, and she told me a bout a fantastic night time walk up the Old Man of Storr, a rock pinnacle- there is a light and sound show up there - very inspiring and atmospheric. And she went out on a glass-bottomed boat too, which was excellent as the waters are so clear you can see all the marine life.
I'll watch out for speed traps but exceeding the limit in the camper seems unlikely but then I only get tickets when I am on holiday. I'd like to thank the Kirkcudbright police for spoiling my May holiday.
The otter hide looks brilliant and the Coral beach looks interesting and Ann is going to seek out the batik place.
The walk up the Old Man of Storr looks doable even for someone as unfit as me.
Only four day until we go.
Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!
Hi we lived in Kyle for 15 yrs ,This is the best time to go over to Skye no midgies and not many tourists, I know they need the tourist to make a living but its heaven when at the end of the season they dwindle away. Then all the locals come out of their hidey holes and thats when you get a good ceilidh about midnight the fiddles come out fantastic music and the Gaelic flows.....slainte mhor (good health)
Have a lovely time, we go back a lot we made a lot of good friends there .
