Just got back from a long weekend spent at Bath Chew Valley Caravan Park.

What an absolute treat this site is. Only about 30 pitches (ours was fully serviced), adults only and very well managed.

Tucked away in the back of beyond but only approx. 10 miles from Bristol and Bath City Centres and 20 miles from the coast at Weston Super Mare.

Drawbacks? Only one for me and that was that you are not permitted to park your car on the pitch. You have to leave it in the car park. For those not challenged in the mobility department, this is not really a problem but for me it was a flippin' nuisance.

One other thing I had a job understanding. Caravanners using an awning are not permitted to use a groundsheet. Fine, but how do you reconcile tenters using tents with fixed in groundsheets pitching on grass?

Vic

I think the clue is in the name of the park - its caravans only. MT

Up until this year, we had a tent with fixed ground sheet and were offered a pitch at this site - so I don't think it is all caravans only.

Secondly - this no groundsheet in awnings rule is quite tiresome. We have been put off quite a few sites who won't allow our eco friendly ground sheets. This includes Longnor wood - which looks lovely, but we won't go on a grass pitch without a ground sheet and you can't prebook hard standing there.

Not so - we got back to the site early on the Friday evening to find quite a large tent pitched on the grass just across the service road from us.

I can understand site owners being a bit "picky" about this issue of groundsheets. However, as the customer I can and I am just as picky about where I stay.

So if I can't have a full service pitch with hard standing when I want then I don't settle for anything less and I go elsewhere. My wife and I certainly wouldn't contemplate pitching our caravan and awning without being able to use the groundsheet and yes, ours is a breathable one.

This particular issue at this particular site just seemed to whiff of double standards.

Vic

Hi Vic

I agree - and we won't use the awning without a groundsheet either - as the 2 dogs lie in there most of the day. I hate to think what state they would be in in wet weather, on a grass pitch with no ground sheet down.

Of course the owners have concerns, especially with the old style, non-breathable ground sheets. Like you, we vote with our feet. It has to be hard standing or grass with eco ground sheet. If not, we don't go.
