Since coming to UK we have done a bit of camping around Hastings, Yorkshire Moors, Dartmoors, Ireland and Dover. We would really like to do some through walks through Wales or Scottish Highlands or Lakes District but I cannot seem to find where I can find out where I can camp in these national parks (i.e. I don't want any facilities, just a spot in the wilderness!) Back home, we contact the Parks Ranger for the area, provide a route outline in case we get lost and the ranger tells us one or two spots out there where we can pitch tent. How does it work here? Does anyone know who I should contact? Many thanks!

No specific contacts that I know of, though in theory you are right in that you should sek the permision of the landowner. I have camped all over uk in everything from a bivi bag to a camper van for over 35 years (not continuously :-) and never had any problem, although a tent is the most difficult.
How about the middle one in my profile. Thats our tent centre left. Apart from the local ranger, we never saw a soul.
I have been looking at doing exactly the same thing. Just bought myself a nice 4 season 2 man tent, already got a 4 season sleeping bag, now have to decide where to go. From everything I have read, 'wild camping' is not allowed in any of the National Parks, BUT lots of people do it, and a 'blind eye' is usually the attitude as long as you obey some pretty obvious rules concerning fires/litter etc.
One place I know they do it in summer is Sprinkling tarn close to Scarfell.. I know because I have seen the pictures... rather chilly up there though right now i would have thought.
If you do get out and about do let me know how you get on.
All the best
Chris
