I'm a single mum with a small camper and awning and am looking for sites where I don't have to pack up the van and drive off site each day. I don't really like the huge sites that have everything there, but would like to find smaller more informal sites where I can walk with a 4 and 5 year old to a basic shop, possibly a pub that serves food, beach, park etc... (not expecting all of these!)
I love Ashurst in the New Forest because we can set up camp and don't need to drive anywhere if we don't want to. We can walk to the shop in the morning to get supplies, spend the day exploring the forest from the site then have a meal at one of the two nearby pubs if we choose. There is even the station if we want to go further afield. I'd like to find similar sites in the South East (and further afield for our longer trips). I'd be truly grateful for any suggestions.

Hi, suggest you join the camping/caravav club. This will save you money on your site fees, also you will receive a bumper camp site book for England/Ireland/wales/Scotland. It tells you all tourist information, local shops, pubs, towns, walks, interests and the next nearest campsite if you want to move about. Also, this site has campsite listings/reviews. I do not know the name of the site, but my daughter lives in Newent, Gloucs. She said that there is a beautifull campsite about 1 ~ 2 miles away, she said its like a little oasis and lovely scenery where ever you look or walk. She is 8 miles from Gloucester.
Hope to have been of some help ~ Keep looking ~ you will find somewhere ~ then you can share it with us.
I dont know of anywhere in the south east but for longer trips Landguard camping in Shanklin in the Isle of white is great, its a short walk into shanklin with all its shopes, pubs, resturants, the beach, chine, old thatched village, crasy golf etc.. and the station which you can use to go to ryde or sandown and it also conects with the steam railway for a few days out without driving.
Also C & CC site at Keswich is a five miniute walk into the centre as well and on the edge of the lake, theres shops, resturants, pubs, cinema, swimming pool, pitch and put, crazy golf, rowing boats and the launch on the lake that you can use as a bus, theres also lots of busses to other interesting places a few minutes walk away.
Hi.I suggest the Caravan club site Braithwait fold Bowness lake windamere,a short walk to pub/resturaunts.shops and best of all the lake steamers for trips out around the lake..royell.

Longleat Caravan Club Site. T ake plenty of food and you will not have to move for a week. Fish and Chip van calls too. 2 Pub's within walking distance. Longleats cafe's etc are open during the day. Loads of walks, you are free to explore the grounds after tea when most people have gone home except for the fishermen. Fantastic lake and Forest walks. You can also get really close to the Hippos who play by the bank at night. It's heaven.
Salisbury C & CC site - just a short stroll along the towpath into the City, and even better Old Sarum looms just north of the site and is 'do-able' on the way to the Harvester / Beefeater, whatever for dinner!
Thanks very much for all the suggestions. I shall note them all down for when I head in the various directions mentioned. I am a member of the camping and caravaning club - it's just nice to get some personal recommendations based on experience. The hippos sound fun!!
