I am new to this camping game and would have thought that there when reading reviews there would be a ratings system, i would like to see whats the best campsite (according to those who have been there) in the cumbria area for example.
Surely it wouldnt be too difficult!

Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!
Ah yes but! What if your view differs from mine as to what makes a good campsite? Most grading systems work by awarding stars or what ever by the quantity of the facilities provided but not always the quality. If you are reading a review on here you have to think of it as having a conversation with the person who has visited the campsite in question.

David
different trips also require different facilities e.g... if i go for my main holiday, i require bars, arcades and parks for the kids, a swimming pool, ect if i go for a long weekend, i want a quiet family friendly site ( that dont keep the kids asking for money all day and night)
from what ive read most sites are judged on the cleanliness and maintainence of their facilities and grounds, their accessability, local shops ect and surrounding areas and friendliness.....
thats why the vitual brosure on here is good, you can have a look at some pictures of the site, and read the comments

David, I am not sure that that is right...
<Every year the National Tourist Boards inspect more than 1,000 parks under the British Graded Holiday Parks Scheme.
The assessors inspect over 50 separate aspects of the Parks, from landscaping and layout to maintenance, customer care, and most importantly cleanliness. So you can rest assured that when you choose a star rated Park, your expectations will be met or even exceeded.
Parks are required to meet progressively higher standards of quality as they move up the scale from one to five stars.
One star: Acceptable - to achieve this grade, the Park must be clean with good standards of maintenance and customer care. Two stars: Good - all the above points plus an improved level of landscaping, lighting, refuse disposal and maintenance. May be les expensive than more highly rated Parks. Three stars: Very good - most Parks fall within this category; three stars represent the industry standard. The range of facilities provided may vary from Park to Park, but they will be of a very good standard and will be well maintained. Fours stars: Excellent quality will be found at this level. You can expect careful attention to detail in the provision of all services and facilities. Four star Parks rank among the industry's best. Five stars: Exceptional quality standards can be expected from Parks with this grading. Highest levels of customer care will be provided. All facilities will be maintained in pristine condition in attractive surroundings>

PS, the Cumbria Tourist Board website http://www.golakes.co.uk/stay/Default.asp?bhfv=8&bhfx=8,0,0,0 very clearly lists the star rating of campsites against their names, which would help you draw up a shortlist before using the excellent campsite search facility to read reviews from actual users. MT
