Hi, I am contemplating camping The Border Forest Caravan Park nr Kielder For the last week in June and first week in July.I have been told that there is a big problem in that area with MIDGES, can anyone confirm this, and is it a big problem as i don`t wish to spend 2 weeks walking around in insect repellant.

Well..... Sorry to have to put anyone off my beautiful county but that is a problem up there. That said, Hubby used to go up there all summer and found ways round them - such as smoking tabs a lot! lol. Apparently getting drunk helps a lot too - you don't feel the pain so much!!! There's so many other places here though, I'd recommend you camp somewhere in Tynedale and take day visits to Kielder, or along Hadrian's wall - some good sites there too.

Don't be put off coming up here all together - you'll love it!

We went in early July last year the midges were horrendous they decended like a fog just when finnished barbie had to go for drive in car to escape the little critters. They appeared about 8 in the morning warden says you can set your watch by them.Needles to say the tent came down in the morning and we headed for the coast all bitten and itchy.

My hubby went there with a Youth group, he was rushed home cos he'd been bitten so much, his body went into overdrive. He looked like somehting out of a horror movie.
Even if you use nets, they get into your food.
There are plenty of other really lovely sites, if you want to visit Kielder for a day, do so, but don't stay there.

If your wanting to be in that area consider Brownrigg at Bellingham, 2 mins walk from a lovely country village, good co-op, banks 15 min drive to kielder and hadrians wall.
