Hi,  any  recommendations  as  to  the  best  route  to  the  West  of  Scotland.  Glencoe  or  across  Tyndrum?  Husband  anxious  about  impatient  drivers  and  impending  hills.

Just back from Ayr at the weekend

OH suggests M6 then M74 (A1 and A68 not brilliant) then A82. Depends where you're headed, south or north?

Go via Glencoe, it's easy. As long as you have an adequate towcar you should have no problems whatsoever.

Befor Glencoe there`s only one heavy climb with a sharppish left bend part way up and a pull in at the top where you can buy tartans and other presents. Parked at the top 2 years ago and watched caravans being towed up without any problems, we only had a camping trailer on at the time and were wondering what it would be like if we take our van next time

Been through Glencoe a few times now both with and without the caravan, its an absolutely awe inspiring journey through the Glen with wonderful views for the passengers!

Like Vectratot says there is a lay-by at the top of the steepest climb, (made it up that one with a 1.4 Astra towing at 95% no problems!) Stop there for a cuppa and a sandwich and listen to the piper while you peruse the many tartans and other items that are sold by the locals. There is nothing like looking back down the glen while listening to the pipes playing in the open-air, a truly inspiring experience, even for those who aren't Scots!

Last year there were some road works on one of the bridges which did cause a slight hold-up but we went through in about ten minutes so not so bad and it did let us see the wonderful waterfall under the bridge they were building! [:o)]
To check up on the Scottish roads for work, weather or problems log onto Traffic Scotland, it was spot on when we went up to Inverness a fortnight ago.

Have a great time up here!!!

Both routes are fine. If you're going to Oban then turning west at Tyndrum is significantly shorter than going via Glencoe. Both routes are very scenic.

Glencoe is stunning if/when you can see it!?!?!?

If towing you are probably better to avoid "A" roads into Scotland as they offer few safe passing places for impatient drivers - with the possible exception of the A1 that has some (but not enough) dual carriagway sections between Morpeth and Edinburgh!

Glencoe, just for the scenery, on the down hill section in to glencoe cars can easily overtake you no problem. Word of warning they are putting a new bridge up in Glencoe and have temporay traffic lights. You  come round a bend on the downhill section and might find a stopped car in front of you. We hit it on Easter Saturday the delay is not that long except when we where there the traffic lights where both showing green!!!! Took about 10 minutes of frantic reversing and arm waving before they sorted it out.

The road through Glencoe is fine - I've done it in an artic (not a very powerful one) on the way to Skye. Many moons ago now.

Biggest problem is watching the road and the scenery
