I would not recommend just turning up, you may be disappointed. I always book a pitch just to be on the safe side, even if the campsite says they have plenty of pitches.
Nothing worse than travelling for a couple of hours to arrive on site, to be told there are no available pitches!

Hello, me again. Am I right in thinking that you don't have to pre-book when you go camping. Is it right that you just turn up?
I've had mixed responses to that question when I asked the campsites I wanted to use.
I've been doing most of my camping this year solo with scooter and tent.
Somes sites said just turn up "we will fit you in", others wanted me to book.
So what I have done for my big trip in a few weeks time is to book the main stops ( I'm in the CCC) and leave the en route stops open.
We always book as we find that with a large tent like ours, pitches that can take us can be limited. Plus I would hate to get somewhere only to find they don`t accept tents our size. I find it best to book especially if you want EHU.
it used to be like that a few years ago, we used to decide to go Friday afternoon, throw the stuff in the car and set off, always used to find somewhere to camp. These days, camping seems to be a lot more popular so advisable to book first particularly at school holiday/bank holiday times. I think also people have bigger tents and need electric hook up, so maybe campsites are more geared up to this and have less pitches available.
Because we use EHU we usually book about three to four weeks in advance but on the odd occasions we have managed to get a pitch with just a couple of days notice. As Ratty has pointed out, if you don't enquire or book first you run the risk of the site being full.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
