I've recently been told that no public campsite will allow overnight hammock camping in the UK - does anyone have any experience or information on this?
I've previously used my hammock (a Hennessey) on private campsites with no bother - I have a bad back and find that I get a much better night's sleep if I use a hammock rather than sleeping on the ground (even with an airbed, thermarest or camp bed).
I'd like to be able to go camping with my partner (and our dogs), with him and the dogs in a tent and me in a hammock, but it seems no-where listed will allow it - some have stated that it's for health and safety reasons, or have said that 'people will garotte themselves'...
Does anyone know of anywhere in the Devon/Dorset area that would allow hammock camping?
Thanks!
ODG
Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!
Holestation adult only camping near Okehampton and Ashbourne Woods near Rattray (just off the a38) have used both sites, ashbourne is better for hammocks if you have a large group but Holestation is fine if it's just one or two hammocks.
You deserve a bloody good ribbing for that, Scozzle, particularly as it was your first post on here, but seeing as you are still giving out useful and up to date info, even if the OP is no longer with us (in the forum sense!), I'm tempted to say you just about got away with that!
I think the ancient post referred to tieing the hammock to trees on site. Most sites I've been to, if they have trees, don't allow a washing line. Surely a site owner can't object to the frame that holds a hammock.
However, OP was long long ago! Personally I find a hammock too cold & claustrophobic, trapped in a tube.
