Can anyone recommend any sites on Skye.. we have a large family tent and we're looking for a quiet, safe (for two young boys to explore / play around), clean and friendly site preferably with nice views. We also require a reasonable gap between pitches.

Click this link and look for the campsite in Uig (see review). Backed by mountain there are some stunning views on the harbour and sea. Green erea for tents with picnictables and playground. No pitch borders. Dated but well kept clean and very hot showers. Very quiet at night when we went there in 2005.
Good food and drink in the pub on th ecorner, just outside the site. Try their Scampi and chips with a local brew (brewery is within stagering distance of the campsite as well.) Caledonian McBraine could take you for a daytrip to one of the other islands.

A few years back we stayed in a log cabin at Dunvegan and had a fantastic week there. Scenery is great and the beaches on the West coast of Skye are fantastic! Oh and don't forget a walk to Macleods Maidens - absolutely breathtaking! Oh and don't forget to stop at the Uig Hotel for a drink/food - great views of the bay and the Harris ferry. Spent a Hogmanay there never to be forgotten!

I've just come back from 4 nights on Skye, with a large tent. The first night we tried to spend at Sligachan, which is at the foot of the Cuillin hills, on the edge of a loch. The wind was howling, and we ended up snapping a tent pole. Some friendly people offered us the use of a spare tent (it was only just a two man!) so after a small deliberation in the pub, helped by the continuing gale and rain, we opted to "camp" in the self-catering hostel up the road! (Which was fantastic by the way!)
We spent the next three nights at Torvaig, just outside Portree. The site is quite sloping in places, but roomy and if you arrive early, I'm sure you would find a flattish spot. The warden is very friendly, the toilet blocks and showers were spotlessly clean, and it was £4 per night, which also made it one of the cheapest sites we stayed at in Scotland. There wasn't any specific facilities for kids (although I didn't look) but it was 5 mins in the car or 20 mins walk into Portree, where there are all the facilities. Not superb views, but you could see the hills, once the rain lifted! It seemed to be quite sheltered though, and not too midgy. I'd definitely go back!
