CL sites do vary enormously which is part of the appeal. My idea of heaven, a site in the middle of nowhere with minimal facilities would be someone else's nightmare for that very reason. Because there is so many of them, there is something to suit everyone.
They range in price from £4 per night to £10 depending on location, facilities etc.
If I've not visited an area before I tend to look in the book for one that sounds promising. Stay there for the night and then have a drive around the area the next day. You can look at sites without actually staying there. Write a few comments next to the listing in the book. Either 'excellent site' or 'pile of poop'. That way you very quickly build up a porfolio of sites that are suitable for you.
If the worst happens and you don't like the site you're on there's always another one not far down the road.
