Myself and OH were in a field in Atherstone a fortnight ago and just got the tent up when a huge thunderstorm hit!!!!!! We thought it wouldn't last long ( how wrong we were!) An hour and a half later we were still sitting there with the OH's fingers broken with me squeezing them so hard!!!!! We eventually ran for the car!!! All electrics went off, showers, electric gates, etc!!! Not handy as we were going to a family party, we found a side gate and phoned a relative in a nearby hotel and jumped in their hotel room!!!! Never stuck for an answer to a problem!!!
I like watching thunderstorms......but never again in a tent!!!!!! VERY SCARY!!!!!!!!!
there was a huge electrical storm a couple of weeks ago while we were camping... the thunder shook the ground and the lightening lit up the tent! it woke us up at about 4am. i wasnt worried about being struck as the trees were higher than the tent, i was worried about the electricity pylon than ran across the fields though!!
While reading some of these posts I understand that it's a serious subject but lets face it you have more chance of winning the lotto than getting hit by lighting ,I think in all honesty you just have to be careful where you place your tent
Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!
Last year lighting struck the phone pole outside of my house, you wouldn't belive what it took with it before it discharged into ground through the earth wire. All the phones, modem, pc, 3 vcr's, 2 dvd players,1 dvd recorder and a video cam that was on charge. Sigh... we still haven't replaced it all. One hell of a bang though! Thought a bomb had gone off....

Worst thing was house insurance wouldn't cover it, natural disaster and all that.

Having worked in the insurance industry for many years I find it a little worrying that your insurers fobbed you off with "natural disaster" excuse. The same could be said of a storm or flood, but you would expect those to be covered under your policy.
I would think even the most basic policies would cover damage caused by lightning and as there appears to be clear evidence of a ground stike outside your home would have thought no arguments at all!
Sorry you appear to have been let down by the industry.

They lost out in the end, after we tried to argue this point with them, and they still stuck to their guns, we changed to another company, along with neighbours and family.
Incidentally it was around the time that Cornwall had suffered some server storms and floods coupled with very high tides. A lot of people lost out also to the same statement! It was all over the local news at the time, how insurance companies were fobbing people off with this excuse.
We now have a new for old with a great company. When I spilt a pot of paint on my daughters carpet last month, they couldn't do enough for us. Told us to just go ahead and order a new one. We were very impressed.
Best wishes,
Linda
