Do you think Shell Island will still be busy in 1st 2 weeks of september???, last time i went i was 7 (now 38) i remember having a wonderful time there and would love to take my children.
Many thanks

I wouldn't have thought it would be very busy. We were there at the beginning of September last year for a few days and it started to get much quieter after the childrens school holidays were over.
I have been going for 30 years myself (since 6 weeks old!) and last went 2 weeks ago for the weekend when it was very hot. It was busy over the weekend but by the monday it was pretty quiet.
Have fun if you decide to go. I'm sure your children will love it as much as you did when you were young. Mine have a great time and always say it's their favourite holiday even though they're pretty well travelled.
hi there, we are going next weekend and cant wait. I havent been there since I was young. The web site says they are 80% full at the moment I hope we get on there!
We were at Shell Island last week and, to be honest, we were so disappointed we only stayed 1 night. Everywhere was absolutely PACKED which in itself would not have been a problem but for some reason, during the hottest weather of the season, the site only had 1 shower for each sex open! We tried several times during the day to get somewhere near but in the end we just gave up and came home.
Really disappointed :-( The site was so beautiful though, we will definitely give it another go, after the school holidays maybe.

where and what is shell island?????
Shell Island is what it says - an island with lots of shells! I should know, I used to live near there while in exile!
Seriously though, it is about four miles south of Harlech and six miles north of Barmouth in the coastal area of southern Snowdonia. It is reached by means of a causeway from the village of Llanbedr. The whole "island" is a campsite of some three hundred acres, making it the biggest camp site in the UK and the largest tent site in Europe.
Although there does appear to be plenty facilities (shops, bars. cafes, showers etc) on the island, they are, in fact, woefully inadequate when the island is full. I'm not sure of the actual capacity, but it is in the thousands of units. Unfortunately, there aren't the hundreds of toilets and showers necessary to cater for that number. On the other hand, the place is so big that you can easily hide yourself away and get back to nature, rather like wild camping if that's what floats your boat.
A great place at quieter times, but I wouldn't go during the height of the school holidays.
A fantastic site but as previously mentioned woefully lacking in decent toilet and shower facilities, That said we had one of our best camping trips ever a couple of years ago on this site., Local caught lobster and crab in the supermarket on site really good prices and washed down with champagne plus a campfire!!! It was magical looking out over the campsite and seeing the plumes of smoke going up into the sky at night. (Could have something to do with champagne!!!!!) Fantastic place and cant wait to go again.

Seems like this is a "love it or hate it" site depending on when you go, how busy it is and what chavs happen to be camping nearby.
Shame really as myself and the girlfriend are only 25 and regularly go camping with groups of friends but we just like to have a good laugh, enjoy the location and weather, have a few drinks and some nice food. Most rowdy we get is a bit of frisbee or rounders!
We took a cheep barbecue and had fires in that. You are not allowed fires on the grass, you can buy fire bins but they are expensive.
The site is Brilliant, rough and ready, no electric and small facilities, but it is fun and well I just LOVE IT.
The people who run the site are great. We found them helpful and extremely friendly.
If you want pampered camping with all mod cons then it may not be for you, but ths year was the first time my children had ever been camping and they loved it. Even my 14 year old teenage daughter coped and without hair straightners !!
Have fun, :D and if the weather is really bad then take a load of 2p's for the penny slot machines
