We are planning to stay (first camping trip) at the Grouse & Claret in Rowlsey (nr Matlock) within the Peak District.  We're going the first weekend in September and also plan to visit Chatsworth House etc whilst we are there.  Does anyone know this camp site?  If so any feedback, advice, things to see and do???????  I want to make sure my kids enjoy the camping experience so that we can do it again and again so I would be very grateful for your reply.

Used to be one of our favourite sites until last year when we arrived and there wasn't a (caravan) pitch although we had booked a few weeks early.  So arrive in plenty of time!  The tent field is ok but does get a bit full at weekends.  The Grouse is really nice food not bad and it has a small shopping outlet behind (incl campshop in case you forget anything).  facilities basic but sufficient and you're not pushed off early next day which for caravans if a big plus. There is a nice play area for the kids too.

Please will you post back and let us know how you got on and how full caravan site was, I'd love to go back again but they put me off!.

hi, we have stayed there several times, the last time being 2 weeks ago. i will say that the pub is very good, both beer & food, if a little expensive. It is also very busy ! the pub managers also manage the site, and in my opinion when they are busy in the pub the site suffers a little. The site is pleasan, grass and hard standings. We arrived later than planned dure to traffic, but we had booked a hardstanding pitch in advance. the landlord, who was rushed off his feet in the pub, showed us to a pitch which had a large tent on half of it, muttered that it shouldnt be there, pulled out two guy ropes ? and told us to put the van next to it. As the place was packed we had no options. It didnt detract from our weekend but by god we were close to the tent ! about 6 inches !. i would recommend the site however, just get there early ! there is loads for the kids to do in the area, there is a steam train about a mile away which goes to matlock, gullivers world at matlock bath which is good but very steep, crich tram museum, which my daughter loves, and loads more. Bakewell is close too & chatsworth. Im sure you will have a good time, just be prepared to be a little closer than usual to the neighbours !

Forgot - the toilets are ok, bit basic, but got very dirty when the place was full, and cleaning seemed to be a bit haphazard, again i think because the site and pub were so full that the staff were flat out in the pub. Also the pub does breakfasts - very nice !
