Have decided must go to the west coast of Scotland next year, and really want to stay at Applecross, hopefully arriving there via the 'Bealach na Baa' - has anyone gone over the pass, and if so, what are your thoughts? Our mo'van is 24' long, so would very much appreciate any comments on the foolishness of the attempt...
Many thanks in advance, for anyone's views!

Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!
I have been over the pass. You will not be able to tke your van over it,There is a big sign when approaching the pass saying no to certaain vehicles, and anyone with a nervous disposition do not attempt, there is no going back if you dont like it,talk about going up in the clouds, there are a couple of hair pin bends as you get near top.I was near to tears by the time we got to top,But people do what they want to do,but if they decide to go to Applecross this way i advise plenty of toilet roll. Please i wouldnt attempt it,go into Applecross the other road,if the other road had not been there i dont know how i would ever have got out,i suppose i could have hired a boat.Margie
hi, we stay near Applecross every year in a holiday cottage and have done the "pass of the cattle" road many times.
I would not recommend you doing this road in your van, there is another way in to Applecross, which, if it were me - I would do!
the road is twisty, most parts are single track and hairpin bends....there is a warning sign at the bottom advising not suitable for learner drivers/lorries etc - but i cant remember if it said anything about vans/camper vans .
The views are spectacular from the top, unbelievable - like you are on top of the world!.....a definate "must do" whilst in Wester Ross......Torridon is also very nice.
If some one has gone up their in their van - im sure they will tell you, if you are of nervous disposition or scared of heights - go the other way around!
Did it last year in our camper (Only 20ft), the hairpins at the top had it fighting for traction and skipping. The council lorries use it and don't seem to have any problems but I wouldn't attempt it again.
We came down it in June, saw quite a few motorhomes coming up, also delivery trucks and lorries. I've seen worse, the bends are quite wide, but only you know how confident you are!
i didnt think lorries were allowed up there? We havent seen a lorry going up or down. Also i would say the roads up the top arent wide either, very sharp bends.
There are no restrictions on the road just advice as to the gradients and hairpins. I have done it several times in cars/landrovers etc over the years but as I said previously my Talbot struggled to make it,
Applecross-The pass of the cattle as its called, done it
several times,Fantastic views,the wife,s nervous and didn,t
say a word give it a GO i am 7 metres,
------------- ex trucker-cont.like small rural sites,dog-lover,would like to go full-timing
Been over pass with car and caravan with mum and dad in the early seventies.Frightened the life out of us.....I think my dad thought it would be like the alpine roads in Switzerland which it wasent.D'ont think i'd attemp it in anything other than just a car to be honest!
------------- A day without laughter is a day wasted
Been over it on numerous occasions with mini bus tour, fine if you have weight over your drive wheels in wet conditions. The alternative route has some tight bends but obviously not as severe.
I did on one occasion meet a ten tonner with a JCB on the back and I have followed the beer wagon over, but these guys are driving the road every week.
At the end of the day it about how much confidence you have in driving over it.
