We have just bought a sterling overlander caravan and we will be using a transit van to tow with as my car is too small (ford focus), we have now heard from some people we will have a hard time finding a site that will let us on, i was wondering if anyone else uses a transit to tow with and have they had any problems,

You do see a lot of sites that say no commercial or lettered vehicles but I'm sure that there are plenty of sites that will take you, even if you have to make a phone call to explain that it is your husbands business vehicle and you are not travellers. I have seen transits and other vehicles on plenty of sites. Welcome to UKCS.
thank you for your reply, i have been getting a list of numbers for caravan sites i will start ringing around tomorrow, fingers crossed. With a bit of luck might get away for the last week of the holidays,
Hi, I used to tow a caravan with a transit van years ago and we did get told on a few sites that commercial vehicles were not allowed on their camp site but when I explained to them that there was no lettering on it and it was actually just my personal choice of transport (and very handy when you're on holiday) they were all okay. I think it happened 3 times over a couple of years but we managed to talk our way through. Some sites may be stricter though so , like magicaly says, you'd maybe better phone just to make sure.
Welcome to UKCS too!!!

Just wondering.....why do sites not accept commercial/lettered vans?
My OH has his own sign written van and we have considerded going camping in it as it would be so practical (just chuck everything in and not have to precision pack the car).
Spoke to an owner once and he said the reason generally quoted was to guard against travellers invading the site but it also had something to do with lowering the tone if lots of Transits were on site.
HIS WORDS NOT MINE!!

We use a commercial vehicle (its our van rather than a work one which we bought to get all the camping stuff in) and have never had a problem, although I do read the campsite blurb just in case.
We tend to use C&CC sites and they are fine with them.
As someone else here says I'm sure if you explainned your situation it would be fine.

We stay regularly at Woodlands in the Forest of Dean and have often seen transits there. Some sites allow commercial vehicles but say they have to be parked in a special area away from the caravans. Thats ok I suppose if you don`t mind not having your car right outside your caravan. Woodlands is a Forestry commission site by the way so perhaps they allow commercial vehicles at all their sites. It might be worth giving them a ring, they`ve got some lovely sites we`ve been to several.
Never even occurred to me that we might have a problem. Our van is not signwritten and is ideal for camping from so I would be extremely unhappy if I found we were not allowed on a site because of our vehicle. I'd like to see my husbands face if he were faced with that!!
We have a sign written van and have never had a problem with getting oon sites but we have a tent that may make a difference as when was the last time you saw travellers pitching a tent lol
I always phone to check as if you email they tend not to reply
It could be worst you could have a Hobby or any large twin wheeled van to go with your transit then try getting on a site. Even if you are not a traveller most will not take you.
Just come back from Cofton Country Holidays in Dawlish and they seem to have no problem with commercial vehicles towing caravans - there were plenty of them on the site - even one towing a hobby.
