We have just come back from our 1st camping trip to the Wye Valley. We stayed at Doward Park in Symonds Yat West in the Wye Valley. What a beautiful place. It was really a good camping experience and I have now got the camping bug. It is a family run site with good clean facilities. There is a toilet/shower block and a small shop. The site has 20 plus pitches with some EHU pitches. There is a lovely small woodland area called 'Bluebell woods' with a tyre swing and wooden climbing frame. This is a very safe area for the children to go and play, make friends and build dens. My son had great fun building camps with the other children and it is close enough on site for you to hear the children - my sons laughter could be heard quite clearly!!!

It was a great base to venture out and we did alot of walking. King Arthurs caves are in close proximity and the Wye Valley walk is close by. We also went on a sculpture trail in the Forest of Dean which was beautiful and we got to see lots of wildlife as well as take some great photos. We also went out to Tintern Abbey which was stunning with the forest as a backdrop and very tranquil. Raglan Castle was also good fun and my son loved exploring the dungeons and ruins. We went to Perrygrove steam railway and did a treasure hunt, finding clues in a forest and on the train and then identifying a treasure box to open with a secret key - great fun for a 4yr old.

There was a Morrisons locally in Ross on Wye so we were able to stock up on food. It was a great 1st camping experience and I am now searching to find our next weekend away! We will go back as there is so much more to do which we missed in the 7 nights we were there.

Thanks to this site for helping me to choose a lovely place to start!

Diane

Hi Diane,

Glad you had such a nice holiday. We love that area and I would love to visit Tintern Abbey but I`m pretty sure that they don`t allow dogs in the grounds. It`s a pity as dogs are very welcome at Glastonbury Abbey.

I had a wee in King Arthurs Cave once!  I didn`t leave any tissue behind though I put it in a doggy "doo" bag. I don`t suppose anyone wanted  to know that really.

Glad you had a nice time.
