Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!
my sister went to harlyn sands this summer, on harlyn bay (in between newquay and padstow)...beach looked great in her photos...good for surfing and rock-pooling
Gwithian and the sites around the Hayle area (we use the beach at gwithian for our son) but we have for the last few years camped at Helston and travelled over
Marver holiday park at Mawgan Porth. 100m flat walk to surfing beach. Lies in between padstow and watergate bay. Ideal spot, not quite as busy as Newquay. Quiet little site, basic clean facilities with fantastic hot showers.

The Marver has all the advantages you say but - and it might just be me being a wus - I wouldn't be keen to camp there myself.
We have stayed at Mawgan Porth the last two summers and walk past the Marver on our way to the beach. It is situated right next to a road. OK so the road is a quiet one but as a pedestrian walking along the pavement you could literally reach out your hand and touch the tents on the Marver as they are directly next to the pavement with only a low wall separating them. Even the tents that are further in are in full view of all passers by and people in cars.
I wouldn't be making this point here if I hadn't looked on the Marver website, which does not show its relationship to and openess to the road at all. The Marver is always full when we've been past so clearly it doesn't bother an awful lot of people, but it would bother me and might be something that others would take into consideration too. MT

Check out Holywell bay, in the campsite search, great site 5 min walk to great surfing beach. Site has it's own surfing school on-site for hire / instruction etc.

Cayton Bay (just south of Scarborough) has a surf-school. We've been on the beach there (nicely wrapped up in woolies and coats) when there's been quite a few surfers out.

------------- It'll work out in the end!!!!
I didn't do it !! Nobody saw me do it !! You can't prove anything !!
Watergate bay is good for surfing - 2 sites withing walking distance of the beach. About 5 miles north of Newquay. Or further up the coast woolacombe bay - several sites in that area.
can recomend putsbourgh site although getting the van round the lanes is a bit tight,no camping
defo go to north devon as i think you get more real surfers (not just for image)
croyde village could be one of the best place to spend a out of season weekend break even if the sea is flat you can chill in the thatch or billy buds.
welcome aboard to another addict i started 4 years ago ,most weekend or sundays if i'm not in the van are spent driving round trip of 360 miles to surf !!!!
Have a go yourself hire a foamey and get out there!!!! and dont forget the sea is at its warmest at the moment and there are some epic swells about to arrive this weekend and next week!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is expensive, cramped but you fall out of your bag, pull on your wet suit and off you go.
...
I totally agree about Tristram. Fantastic location, very small pitches, v.v expensive for the level of facilities provided and at least one perpetually miserable member of reception staff! MT
