I am planning on going to the lakes in July with my wife. It is my first time camping up there as we can usually be seen hanging around the cornish/devon coast for our hols but thought we'd go somewhere different.
I have had a look through the campsites search and to be honest getting a bit bogged down by choice. We're not mad hikers, no Scafell Pike for us but we do like to go out walking, we like to be within walking distance of an eatery/pub and we would lika a flat pitch with the normal facilities on site, ie showers, wash up sinks etc.
So what has been your favourite site in the lakes that you could reccomend for a weeks holiday in June??
Thanks in Appreciation.
Justin.

If you are a member of the camping and caravan club and like their sites, a good one is at Keswick, it's right by the lake and within walking distance of the town. Depends where in the Lakes you want to be, this is quite far north, there's also one even further north at the top end of Bassenthwaite but can't remember the name. There are plenty more in the Ambleside/Windermere area and another C&CC site at Kendal.
Low Ray Campsite Next to Windermere (the lake not the town) is a nice site. Less than 2 hours walk to Ambleside and the Drunken Duck is just a short walk away for food 'n' Beer. It does get very busy and fill up quick in the summer and bank holidays though (But this is true of all lakeland sites).

Have a look at Park Coppice near Coniston (a 15/20min walk to the village but pub nearby). Not stayed there myself (stayed in the nearby area) but it has good reviews.
Plenty of low level (and high level) walks around the area and it's right next to the Lake. Coniston Village is a good little place with plenty of eating/drinking places for such a small village (some good little shops too)

Never be afraid to try something new, remember.... Amateurs built the 'Ark'... but Professionals built the 'Titanic' !!!
Mifty, Take a look at Croft Holiday Park at Hawkshead, smashing site, and just about 200 mtrs ( if that ) from the village were you will find 3 or 4 pubs and also a mini-market that stocks everything you will need, Nice site in a great part of the lakes.
I will second the site at Coniston. I don't think it is open at the moment, It is a shame, It should be open all year ;-(
(as with all Lakeland sites, it gets full very quickly summer/B.Holidays)
Excellent pubs in Coniston though, Get a pint of Bluebird ale in The Black Bull after visiting the Nearby Grave of one D.Campbell! Plenty of High level and low level walks - Tarn Howes is nice if you are not into the fell walking stuff. (pitch with the strong end of the tent pointing down the lake, believe me)!

Without a doubt castlerigg hall Keswick. Only site we have ever booked to return to. Not that we didn't like the others just like to try somewhere different but Castlerigg is the one we would go to more than once.
Got to be the Castlerigg Hall site with the campers kitchen. Do pizza on an evening. Apparently they got wifi in the campers lounge now. Got a nice cafe and are a conservation site if thats important to you. Steep walk down in to Keswich but its lovely through Spring Woods or down over the open side by the woods.
Been there for about five years and going again when we can. Got two lads now 20 and 16 who refuse to come up there with us unless we go there.
Castlerigg Hall does look nice but its the' no booking for tents' that puts me off. I have always pre-booked campsites and would hate to turn up to a site a had set my heart on, after an 8 hour drive, to be turned away as there was no room and then have to trundle around the lakes to find something second best.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
