Dunno about public transport but plenty scope for backpacking. Gunnerside, Muker, Keld & Kirkby Stephen, Brough all pretty close. Camping is the cost of a donation to charity & they now have a basic toilet acceptable from outside the pub. (I say 'now' - I never noticed it before) They do a pretty good breakfast.

It isn't the cost, it's the freedom to make a little piece of the UK your home for the night! Savour the solitude, scenery and nature of your location. I like to think most campers are responsible and don't destroy the environment; But the ones that do make authorities enforce laws as mentioned around Loch Lomond; Island camping is the same I believe on some Islands in Scotland and certainly in the Lake District for the same reason. Shame!

I worry regarding the festival camping culture too, with regards to people who had such a great time then decide to start camping since they have a tent lying around; But they head out in the wild and think 'Party Time!' and have no respect for where they are!

Well said! As you say there always has been and always will be a*******s who don't give a s**t about the countryside.
They just don't get it about the outdoors or get the buzz that most of us do when walking in the hills or whatever.

Fortunately there are more of us than them but it still gets me mad and have actually came to blows a couple of times over the years when seeing folks destroying things in the countryside for the fun of it, more so when I was younger and I used to do a bit of boxing when I was younger so flooring a couple of neanderthals was always a delight

After reading my post can I just add that it was self defence, I try to talk to people first and I never threw the first blow.
Am sure some others have been there, when the reply you get is "who the F do you thing you are"..

It is a wise man who has something to say.
It is a fool who has to say something.
