No France for us again this year so time for something more local.Some friends recommended this place and they were right.

Although local(ish) to us and readily accessible via main(ish) roads the SATNAV decided to go via the scenic route so we felt that we'd had a mini adventure by the time we arrived.

The lane down to the site:


The camping area is woodland with no cars allowed in. You park up, check in, walk round the site and pick a pitch, tell the owner which pitch you want from those available and then wheelbarrow your kit in.

So probably not a site for Karsten owners unless they're exceptionally fit.

Chez nous:


Note cooking shelter, loo tent and squirrel-proof filing cabinet for food storage. (All included on each pitch.)



There's also a firepit on each pitch with good-sized bags of properly dry logs for a tenner. Kindling and firelighters are free.



The site is beautifully quiet and we sat and watched a deer stroll past our pitch while we were having pre-dinner drinks.

Some Trangias being quiet:


There's a splendid pub in Black Torrington (The Black River Inn) where we had an excellent meal on Saturday night. Highly recommended. Mile and a bit walk.

There's also easy access to the Ruby Trail, although the nearest pub it leads to is less highly recommended:
Landlord: 'You don't want food do you?'
Us: 'No, we'll just have a drink.'
Landlord: 'We've not got much beer either.'

The site cafe is open 8.30 to 10am for breakfast and you can order evening meals to heat up at your pitch. We had a top-notch bacon roll, damn fine coffee and some high-grade granola.
