Hi, going camping shortly to somewhere with no hookup or way of refreezing cold blocks. Have an electric coolbox, 40w, DC12v - Looking at solar generator, solar panels or any other ways of running the cool box without flattening my car battery
There really isn't anything that's going to run a coolbox for any length of time without spending a fortune.
If it's not for very long then a really decent passive coolbox (Iceytek/Coleman Extreme) will keep stuff cool for five days or so.
Otherwise you need to look at a three way fridge which you could run off gas or a small compressor fridge and look at electricity for that.
Simples, just buy a 100ah LiFePO4 Leisure Battery, weight will be around 10kg, so very portable, DC House is about the best buy at the moment, around £200 an off the shelf Solar Generator with similar capacity will set you back at least £1000 !
Also if budget will allows, ditch the electric cool box they are all rubbish, it will drain said battery in no time at all, get a proper portable compressor fridge, I have a little Waeco CF25 and that will run for about a week on a 100ah battery, Halfords do there own version much cheaper than Waeco, as do Mobicool.
If your using a solar panel then even better, just add a mppt solar controller, and that will help keep the battery topped up.
If you also need 240v ac power, then just add an inverter, always go for pure sine wave type, I would say 500w is ideal for camping certainly no more than 1000w, otherwise size and weight become an issue along with high drain on the battery if running at full tilt.
£200 for the lifepo battery, £225 for the halfords compressor coolbox £130 for the invertor, 200w solar panel £230, controller 40 amp mppt £129 totalling £880!
asda or tescos delivery is £4.50 and a large bag of ice is £2 lasts around 3 days - how long are you going for?
Always worth investing in decent kit, who in there right mind would order home shop delivery to a camp site, there is always the chance the driver cant find the place and cancels the order, trust me I am a Home Shop delivery driver, and orders are cancelled on a daily basis due to location not found, to be fair it's usually due to the driver running out of time looking for the place, 10 mins, then your on your way to the next drop, brutal but I see it all the time.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
