We've just scrapped our old caravan, I've got a 7kg bottle of butane with the regulator and hose that I kept. We've got a Coleman Gladiator stove lurking in the cupboard that runs on propane, if we reached the hose to it would it be safe - does it make much difference which actual gas is used??

As far as I know the only real difference between the gases is the pressure they are stored at. As long as you have the correct regulator for the bottle, and they are not interchangeble, appliances will operate on either. One thing I would check though is the hose. These have a specified life and there should be a date on them. If the hose is quite old I would replace it.

Best Regards,
Colin

Ok, thanks! great tip about the hose, I will have a look at it for the date. Will be good to be able to use the stove as it's been a bit redundant, but is a good one.

Calor Gas do a 7kg butane gas bottle, it's worth about £10 when empty and £60 when full.
I will assume that you are using Calor Gas unless you say otherwise.
Your Calor Gas stockist will exchange it for a propane refill on request but you will lose any gas in the bottle and pay for the refill.
A new butane regulator will cost about £15 and a hose about £5, for £20 you can get a regulator and hose kit with free jubilee clips.
If you take your stove to the camping shop and look pathetic enough they may fit the hose for you free of charge, otherwise find another camping shop.
Sorry but at this point you have to decide what works for you.

Coleman Gladiator uses Colman disposable screw in cartridges I think. It may well have a built in regulator. I don’t know if it can be easily converted to use normal gas bottle & regulator. There have been threads about this in the past.

yeh, looking at the u-tube video ,it looks like the stove runs on high pressure gas , either butane or propane , either direct from a bottle or a cartridge, no regulator required
maybe OP can supply a picture of his stove and see if it matches this video

ok, that being the case, you need a high pressure hose , and just connect the bottle directly to the stove, (no regulator)
