Good evening. Looking for some thoughts on the following.
Camping next week with no EHU and thinking about how to keep the food and drink.
I have 3 way fridge and was thinking maybe run this on gas during the day in tent whilst we are out, then vent the tent when we get back.
In the evening, run fridge outside on gas
Bedtime move it inside tent but turned off (food should be ok)
I know the dangers of using gas in tent whilst occupied but I Will only use tent when gas is off. Unfortunately tent doesn’t have a porch else I would use it in there
or get a fishing tent, you know those half dome tent type or even a beach shelter, and have that close to the tent so you can get to things easily but it still gets plenty of fresh air but out of veiw
There’s at least one thread on this very topic, if you search the forum. And CCC has advice too: main one being to have a Carbon Monoxide alarm in the area as you can’t smell CO.
Unless you have some superpowers to guaranty fine weather, then running outdoors is a risk unless under shelter as they are NOT weather resistant, the electrics and even the spark ignition for gas would suffer if allowed to get wet, there's no effective seal on the lid either so likely rain would get inside and spoil contents!
I've used mine under a tarp with a windbreak behind to stop driving rain getting in the works when the tents aren't suitable to house it, in fact the whole kitchen was set up under the tarp with 2 burner stove on stand, fridge, gas cylinder and work table. An external (to tent) shelter is by far the best solution.
Constantly moving it around is not a very practical situation, and indeed raises risk of getting a vapour lock in the refrigerant, which requires emptying it out and turning upside down for up to an hour, then turning it correct way up and leaving for 30-40 minutes for refrigerant to settle before relighting - a real pain when it's a fridge in use! Sometimes necessary to repeat procedure for longer periods before successful!
Sounds like you have a small tent, every possibility that the fridge would be oxygen starved AND carbon monoxide (CO) levels rising to very high levels. Entering the tent to retrieve fridge would entail inhaling 'some' CO, which has a accumulative effect and is not shed from the system that quickly, not a good situation to be repeating! People become ill and even die because they don't realise they are suffering the effects!
