What things do you take with you that make camping more comfortable or enjoyable? Is it something practical or is it something random?

Just a little bit of fun

sounds more like one of those university study type research questions, esp coming from a brand new member

Tent carpet, fan heater, bunting, fairy lights.

The first 2 were functional, and the last 2 were for aesthetic reason.

Work out what you actually need then replace each item in turn with something designed to be aesthetically and ergonomically pleasing. If you can get everything with the same themed style so much the better.
You should aim at displaying opulence with style and function, your true objective is to create jealousy among the plebs.

You will require a wine cooler, to serve crisp cool white wine and nibbles to selected plebs while you describe in detail the advantages of each item in your camping ensemble. The wine must be good enough to keep them hanging on to your every word.

My question was simply for fun and ideas. Yes I am a new member. my 4 year old has really gotten into camping in the back garden but after sleeping on the floor of a tiny 2 man tent I have purchased a 4 man tent and camp beds ( I'm not getting any younger lol ). I was hoping to pick up any ideas or tips that would make our tent a home away from home and then start taking her to real camp sites.

ok how about some tent carpet/picnic blankets, makes a big difference on your feet, or better still put those interlocking foam mats down on the floor if you have room in the car or perhaps a trailor

Comfy reclining chairs with footrests make a big difference to our camping comfort. A Tefal portable induction hob and Bialetti Venus coffee pot add a bit of luxury.

What makes camping a one-off unhappy experience is being cold. Bed socks, hot water bottle, the right kit under the bed, enough on top - many suggestions if you search as this comes up regularly.
Add a well behaved (not barky dog…

It can be never-ending. We filled the car with gear. Then got a trailer, and filled that as well. Its striking a balance. Now we've progressed to a tin tent, with all the gear in it. And a whole lot more in the back of my truck. Like i say, it can be never-ending.

Just as work expands to fill the time available, so Stuff & Kit expands to fill the space available.
I first went camping with a Fiat X19 (a pretend sports car, mid engined), it only had a tiny boot & a tapered front where you’d expect the engine to be. Certainly needed us to prioritise, we had no room for pillows (jumpers went into pillow cases). But we enjoyed it just as much as we did when we later got a bigger car - and of course, a bigger tent because we then had the room for it. Never reached the giddy heights of a camp kitchen though.

If you are having a local weekend camp and the weather turns nasty or you break something you can bug out and go home.
If you are having a week long camp and the weather is bad and your tent starts leaking you will weather the storm and dry everything out and hang on to the end of camp.If anything breaks you'll bring it home to repair or replace later.
If you have a 2 week camp you'll learn everything that's wrong with your tent. If your tent has failed in bad weather you'll want a new and better tent, if you get a heat wave you'll want a tarp, a shaded area outside the tent where you can relax in the heat of the day.
In the first half of the 2nd week of a 2 week camp chairs will collapse, unbreakable plates will break, water carriers will burst, you'll run out of gas, phone batteries will go flat, the handle will fall off the fish slice, boot soles will drop off, the list is endless. You'll be too far from home to bug out you'll have to go without, improvise or buy new locally.
When you get home you'll know what's wrong with your tent and start looking for a tent that better meets your needs, you'll start replacing all the things that failed with better made things that won't fail.
After several years you'll build up a set of camping gear that tells other campers that you are an experienced camper and reflects your character.

In order to slim down gear, took a look to the past when our family of 4 and a dog went camping in a 6' tall canvas ridge tent for a fortnight each summer. we had 4 airbeds, bedding, folding picnic table & chairs, cooking gear (paraffin Primus stove) clothing, food and a transistor radio...all packed in a motorcycle and sidecar combination, we were comfortable.
The biggest difference today is electricity. Back then all we had was a wire to the motorbike's battery to power a single 6v bulb clipped to the pole.
Now just two of us use a 3 gang RCD unit to power the kettle, a small halogen multi cooker and a thermostat controlled convector heater (I find fan heaters are too noisy). I've just switched from airbeds to raised camping bed and mattress to make arising easier.
The awning and windbreaks that complement the 4m bell tent also add to comfort and keeps the dogs contained without tethering. To save on space I chose proper deck chairs which store flat and are surprisingly comfortable.
By using inflatable roof bars, all my gear will easily fit onto and into my car.
The one thing I cannot do without is my transistor radio. I listened to Radio Caroline back in the 60's and still do today.
