I asked this on the Calor news thread but I think it got lost a bit.
So, has anyone (and I'm thinking in particular of those fortunate enough to dwell in France) looked at the pros / cons / practicalities / costs of using French bottled gas in their caravan, eg Primagaz ?
We store a caravan in France and changed over to Butagaz propane a few years ago. We just needed to change the flexible pipe from the bulkhead to the bottle (the pigtail?) and get an adaptor to fit the bottle. We bought the new fittings over here (over the internet) as it worked out a lot cheaper than getting them in France.
The gas is widely available from supermarkets, DIY outlets, ironmongers etc, works out cheaper than UK gas and means we no longer need to transport full/empty gas bottles between home in the UK and the caravan in France. As here, we had to pay a deposit on the bottle initially, then you just swap the bottle and pay for the cost of the gas.
We thought we might have to bring the van home from France last year (we didn't), but had said that we would keep the Butagaz system and swap over to it for our holidays in France so there would be no worry of running out of gas.
We use our van mainly in France but also for shorter breaks at home. We got rid of Calor a while ago. We have the BP/Flogas small lightweight cylinder and also have a Butagaz le Cube for France. (as said widely available at supermarkets). They both have the same clip-on connections.
