I was gifted this double burner with grill from Halfords,

https://www.halfords.com/camping/cooking-equipment/halfords-double-stove-with-gril........

From the research I've done, I believe it connects to the big gas tanks, but I was wondering if something like the following was possible, with the correct regulator?

https://www.go-system.co.uk/collections/gas/products/powersource-445g-b-p-mix-cartridge

I have no idea what I'm doing so any help would be greatly appreciated! I would go to Halfords and ask, but I just don't trust the teenagers that work there to know the answer to my question!

Thank you!

It must be run off a butane or propane bottle with the correct regulator.
It cannot be connected to disposable cannisters, they can only be used on specific high pressure stoves.

Yes you can with an en417 regulator like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/continental-products-Gas-Canister-Regulator/dp/B07R4NHJWM........

Or similar regulator and hose from GoSystem which you will find on the website you have linked to.

Read the thread 'using a stove with a different canister' on this forum and you will find information on gas consumption and cost.

You would be better using an exchangeable bottle ie Calor 4.5kg butane. The disposable canisters are expensive. With the Calor bottle you need gas hose & jubilee clips & correct regulator for bottle. You can often find empty Calor bottles on boot sales for a few quid.

I dont trust the small disposables as far as i can throw them. Something about their very flimsiness - full of high explosive, just screams UNSAFE! to me.

Whenever a question is asked on this forum about using disposable gas canisters with camping stoves the replies, usually from caravan or motorhome owners, suggest Calor refillable cylinders because it works out cheaper.
Tent campers have to pack all their gear into cars often chosen to suit their everday use and space is often at a premium. Space saving may be the questioner's priority.

The following table of size and weight may be helpful.

TYPE        HEIGHT   DIAMETER   CONTENTS   WEIGHT FULL

EN417
(large)*     160mm     105mm           450g           598g

Campingaz
R904        145mm     203mm           1.80Kg        4.81Kg

Campigaz
R907        285mm     203mm           2.75kg        6.46Kg

Calor
4.5Kg
butane       340mm     240mm           4.50Kg        10Kg

* various sizes available from 100g. Generally contents are Butane/Propane mix for better performance when cold.

There's a very good other than cost reason that so many recommend Calor type refillable cylinders, and that's because the OPs are usually, as in this case, trying to run big multi-burner stoves, and the gas consumption of those can empty a fresh disposable cartridge in an hour or so for the largest size, lucky if you got to finish cooking with the smaller ones! You would need a stock of disposable canisters roughly at the rate of one for every 1-2 days of use! - that's going to eat into car luggage space just as much as a refillable cylinder, or going out to buy afresh every day or so, if you are doing a camp of more than a couple of days!

Disposable canisters are generally only intended for small single burner stoves, Cadac do a multi-canister adaptor device for their stoves to overcome the rather severe limitations of disposable canisters not having sufficient content for the high demand larger stoves.

When I tent camp, I've used a 4.5Kg Calor for my 2 burner stove and gas fridge, that'll last 8 days or so, when I go away end of this month, I'll be taking the 5Kg Gaslight cylinder that normally gets used in the Caravan to ensure I've enough gas whilst in France and unable to get a refill.

I've used those single burner 'suitcase' type stoves and reckon on using a canister a day at least. Tend to have to carry a rather large stock of them, so really no great space saving.

Of course it all depends on how much 'cooking' you do, boiling the occasional kettle and heating some beans, is not exactly going to rate as high demand, but some of us like to eat decent cooked meals.

IMHO if you are doing 'minimalist' camping, then you need to be looking at a very different stove to the 2 burner plus grill type or BBQs that generally initiate these questions.

If you just noted the sheer amount of gear apparently large numbers of 'tent campers' insist on carting nowadays, no gas bottle/canister, is going to dent the space for it all. Blow-up sofas, 40 inch tellys, full fridges, kitchen units, wardrobes.....the list is endless. You've seen all the gear in Go-outdoors and the likes. Well seemingly, good numbers of folk seem to want to take absolutely everything on show. Just how they would transport it seems to come to light only on the day of setting off, if you read some of 'HELP!!' posts on the camping forums.

Your assumptions about the gas consumption of multi burner camping stoves are somewhat off the mark. A quick internet search reveals rated outputs of between 1.2Kw and 2.2Kw per burner. The Halfords stove that the OP refers to is rated at 1.5Kw, as is the strikingly similar GoSystem Dynasty Trio, which is sold with hose and regulator for use with an EN417 threaded canister.
In contrast, the generic suitcase single burner is typically rated at 2Kw and the small, folding single burners which you think are only used by 'minimalist' campers are generally rated between 2.8 and 3.5Kw.
All this tells us is that in practice the gas consumption of all portable stoves is roughly the same. The 3.5Kw single burner will boil a kettle of water faster, but will it use more gas than the slower 1.5Kw burner? Probably not. At lower heat outputs (most cooking) gas consumption will be the same.

Yes, Calor 4.5 kg wins out on price and quantity, it's bulk may be a disadvantage to some. The table in my previous post was intended to help people to make an informed choice of alternatives.

Over the years we have been asked many times on here about what type of gas cylinder and regulators people should buy for double burner stoves. We have always said to get Campingaz 907 cylinders and regulators if you intend to go to France (or further) because Campingaz 907 refills are available throughout France. Unfortunately this advice is now wrong.

Following the fire in the Channel Tunnel in which several lorries were burned out, carrying loose gas cylinders and cans through the Channel Tunnel and on car ferries was banned, it's just that no one told the tent campers about this. Camper vans and caravans are considered to have gas cylinders that are strapped down so the same rules don't apply.

If you are a tent camper and you go by car, bike or on foot you cannot take any gas across the Channel.

My suggestion is that in future we all get stoves, grills and lamps compatible with the Campingaz Easy Click system that run off Campingaz CV 300/470 Plus cans and that we cross the Channel without any fuel. The Campingaz CV 300/470 Plus cans are available at all big French supermarkets and we can buy them when we arrive.
Once we have cooked our last meal in France and have taken down our tents ready to go home we should gift our remaining gas cans to some other poor (British) camper who hasn't yet had a chance to get to the supermarket.

Yes, buying a 2nd set of stoves with gas that is more expensive than refillable cylinders may seem unreasonable, and it tugs at even my heart strings to give away surplus gas but it is better than your car being searched at Customs and having your gas cylinders confiscated.

NOT an assumption at all, calculated from stove manufacturers declared gas consumption figures - hard fact, not assumption! .... and those are backed up by our own usage experience of a variety of stoves over the years.

Most likely that with a single burner cartridge stove you will be doing pretty basic 'cooking', more like simple heating, whereas with a multi-burner stove cooking may be more adventurous (well ours usually is!) and using far more gas in the process.

Not sure that the banning of LPG containers on channel crossings is an outright ban, but certainly restrictions in place.

Channel tunnel: https://www.eurotunnel.com/uk/legal/carriage-of-dangerous-and-hazardous-goods/

We've just done a ferry crossing with Brittany Ferries, and I had a 5kg propane Flowgas cylinder in the car (secured from movement by tight packing, but not restrained as such), for which I checked BF policy before travelling: https://www.brittany-ferries.co.uk/information/faqs/travel-information/can-i-trans......... A similar policy seems to be followed by other ferry companies.

My car was security checked on the way out with a superficial inspection and questioning about contents, and the cylinder was in clear sight, no comment was made.

I know for fact that literally thousands of LPG cylinders have been transported to and from France by British attendees on ferries and no doubt the tunnel as well, to both the Le Mans 24 Hour, and the Le Mans Classic motor races in the past few weeks alone, as the vast majority were camping, as were we, there's around 125,000 Brits visiting spread over both events! Not a single story of anyone having cylinders confiscated, and it's a tight knit community where word would spread quickly if it happened. Most of the vehicles are VERY obviously packed with camping gear, so not a case of risk of cylinders being carried a hidden risk.

I use a Cadac Power Pak dual link here and it works a treat on those three burner stoves. Single bottle version is also available. You’ll need to cut the Cadac connector off the stove end of the hose to use it on a bog standard hose nipple.

Banned by the ferries or not I cannot believe that anyone would wish to travel without a gas cylinder being's securely anchored down in the boot.
