Hi guys.
I am interested in purchasing a camping stove. The manufacturer states that it is to be used with R904 or R907 canisters, however it doesn't come with a regulator. If i was to purchase the required regulator, could i use it with any canister type i please provided the type of gas is the same? For example a CV740 canister?
Thanks
Would have been useful to know the exact stove you had in mind, but assuming something like Campingaz Chef. If so, ANY Propane/Butane cylinder that you can get a regulator (37mBar Propane/28mBar Butane) for will be suitable.
By the way, Campingaz R904 and R907 cylinders are about the most expensive way there is to buy gas! - it's obscenely expensive!!! Easy to find alternatives that are around twice the gas volume for half the price! Calor 4.5Kg butane or 3.9Kg cylinders used to be a good alternative, but there have been horrendous supply issues for over a year now with little sign of improvement, so can't recommend under current situation! Flogas do equivalent sized cylinders with a much more reliable supply network. Up side of Campingaz 904/907 is that it's easily available right across Europe, whereas Calor, Flogas and other refillable cylinders are limited to UK (each country has it's own brands and tend to be limited to only that country!).
As far as I know, there is no regulator available to fit a click fit CV740 cartridge, it's only intended to fit directly to unregulated appliances. Good news is that there is a similar disposable cartridge range with a screw fit coupling and regulators are available for them. https://www.camperite.co.uk/screw-thread-cartridge-regulator/
Worthy of consideration is the gas consumption of a stove like a Campingaz Chef (stated at 327g/h = 327 grams of gas per hour), if used with all burners full on, it'll empty even the biggest 500 gram disposable cartridge in 1.5 hours, or maybe looked at in a different way, maybe up to a couple of days with typical use! That's why they tend to recommend the much larger refillable type cylinders with multi burner stoves.
Also to be considered is the time of year you intend to use the stove, Butane (Campingaz R904/R907 are Butane) stops working around 5C ambient temp because the liquidfied gas no longer turns into vaporous gas at low temps! Propane can be used right down -14C.
Sorry, to be more specific it was the campingaz chef. And again i made matters more confusing in my original post, i actually dont intend to use CV470 cylinders. I have a load of coleman screw type 500g disposable cylinders that i use for my BBQ.
So basically, to simplify my question, can i fit a screw type 500g cylinder to the campingaz chef if i use the correct regulator?
Campingaz do a version that looks exactly like the chef but uses CV470 disposable cylinders, which is almost double the price. I wondered if there would be a difference inside the stove as to why they are recommending the larger cylinders rather than the disposable.
If im going to he using disposable screw type disposable cylinders, it makes more sense to buy the cheaper one and buy my own regulator.
1) Yes you can use the Coleman or anyone else's screw fit disposable canisters, it's a standard and common fit screw coupling. The link in my previous post gave you the right type of regulator, they are available from a number of different outlets. I believe the CV470 click fit system is unique to Campingaz.
2) Yes the CV470 disposable canister type stove will differ from the external R904/R907 version, not additional parts other than the coupling for the CV470 canister, but it's known as a High Pressure (not pressure regulated) system and has different gas jets to the other stove which is a Low Pressure (as in external pressure regulator) system.
R904 & R907 are refillable Campingaz cylinders, they are filled with butane. They will power single burner stoves, lanterns and even heaters without a hose and regulator, with a hose and regulator they can power double burner stoves. The regulator and all the other devices screw into the valve on top of the cylinder. Do not lose the screw in cap that comes with a new bottle as they are expensive to replace.
Empty Campingaz R904 & R907 cylinders can be exchanged in UK and Europe, butane is OK in summer but a bit sluggish if it is cold. If you intend to camp in UK and Europe but only in summer go for it, the R904 cylinders are getting increasing hard to find as Campingaz auto refill the R907s.

Campingaz R904 & R907 refills are expensive compared to Calor Gas (and other brands) the smallest Calor Gas cylinder is bigger than a R907, but Calor Gas does a propane option which will work better in winter and can be regulated to a Campingaz double burner stove. Calor Gas is only available in UK so always get a refill before you go.
When you buy the stove tell or show the shop which gas you are using and ask them for a regulator and hose.
Never buy refillable gas cylinders new, they can be bought 2nd hand locally on Ebay etc and you get a shiny nice new one when you exchange it for a refill.
The Campingaz CV470 disposable canister also known as the twist lock is rather good. The hiking stoves and lanterns it uses are very good. It contains a mixture of butane and propane so it works well in cold conditions. There are double burner stoves

and grills
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/275327905478
made specially for it.
A hiking stove usually serves 1 or 2 people, if using CV470 disposable canisters for a whole family you'll get through a lot of gas cans in a week and you should consider a refillable system. (A can lasts about an hour on a double burner stove.)

Campingaz is the likely seller and they really like to recommend their indefensibly overpriced 904/907 cylinders. Refilling a 907 with 2.7kg of gas is going to cost you probably around £35 at the time of writing which is madness.
We use a 4.5kg butane in the van which used to feed a number of different camping stoves and now just feeds the internally fitted gas hob. Locally that costs about £23 for 4.5kg of butane.
So the 907 is about £13 per kg and 4.5kg butane bottle £5 per kg at refill time. Absolute rip..
Why is it worth having one? It's worth having one spare as say in France, it's very hard to fill up the 4.5kg bottles if not impossible but it's really easy with the 904/907s. I have one in the loft and keep it for the odd occasion when we go abroad. Absolutely zero point in the Uk as far as i'm concerned.
Get yourself a compatible regulator if you do. They're around a tenner
