How do you know how much water is in your water container, AquaRoll, Waterhog etc?
Up to now I know when I have run out of water as nothing comes out of the tap. Or to see what I have left, I go outside and lift the container to see how heavy it is and guess how much is left. Is that 10 or 8 lt? How many have gone for a shower and half way through run out of water?
If there was a way to see how much water was in the container at a glance without going outside would that be a useful item to have?
Would you be interested in such a device that didn't require any modification to the container, or touch the water, were it available?
I am trying to gauge interest in such a device. What are peoples thoughts?
I would only use my 40L Aquaroll very occasionally when I stay at a site without facilities as in washing up, shower and toilet, as I have a build-under 80L+ tank that can last me at least 2 days.
Therefore, I would not be interested in such a gadget, sorry.
I would top the Aquaroll up on a daily basis to avoid running out of water based on a rough estimate of my daily usage.
I thought I ran out of water once, in that the water hose being flat at the end, was not allowing water to be sucked up when it was sitting completely flushed with the bottom of the Aquaroll when I pushed it all the way to the bottom while inside the pump connector tube, DOH!
I fixed that by cutting away a triangular piece of hose at the end and the problem is resolved, in that even if I have pushed it all the way to the bottom, there is still a gap for the water to enter the hose.

Two aquarolls is the answer or you could use a dip stick. Someone tried marketing a device that monitors the level of the water, but don't think they sold many as no longer available.
I've a single 56 Litre Waterhog, and I have from experience a pretty good idea of how long that lasts me, I never take a shower (pretty much always use the onboard shower rather than any site facilities) without checking at least half a tank of water available.
As a design engineer with electronics background, I could devise my own metering system if I could be bothered to apply myself to the task, but peering into the tank filler every day and a half or so is not enough of a hardship to make it a priority.
Two problems I face with any measuring device (other than Mk1 eyeball!), is that sometimes I use the tank standing on it's end, and sometimes lying on it's side. It depends on the slope of the pitch, as if water inlet on van too low, the submersible pump hose is not long enough to allow pump to reach near the bottom of the tank when on end, so it's used on side then. Can't see point of having a 56 litre tank with only say 30 litres available, so laying on side and using side filler hole solves the issue.
If your thoughts are along the lines of the ultra sonic gas cylinder lever detectors, then the price puts me off them, it may be reflective of their development/manufacturing costs (it's not, they are just overpriced and profiteering!), but totally unrealistic to their worth to me. A remote reading system with a price of £20 maybe would get my interest.
a kids pop bottle with a hole in the top for a stick to go thr and be air tight placed inside the aquaroll and then as it gets used the level of the bottle drops and you can see the markings on the stick. i use this at home for my rain water barrels and can see when they are getting low
Again everything filled or emptied everyday as needed. have an average use idea so if using more than usual will make an extra check. When using the shower fill aqua, empty wastehog before, each one showers, fill aqua and empty wastehog after.
Do I need an alarm going off when naked in a shower tent, in field full of strangers
Same with caravan the neighbours do not need to know. Though it would give them a giggle
------------- Yesterday is already a dream and tomorrow is only a vision, but today well lived makes every yesterday a dream of happiness and every tomorrow a vision of hope.
Just a thought, I could calibrate my Aquaroll pump connector tube to show how much water is left.
However, I do not believe I need to go that far, just a rough guestimate would be good enough for me personally.

Sorry, nope.
------------- I came into this world with nothing and I've still got most of it left.
What usually happens to me is that my husband showers first and assures me that there is plenty of water left for me. Then, when I am half way through my shower, usually with a hair full of shampoo, the water runs out! I then have to stand shivering in the shower while my husband goes and refills the aquaroll, has a nice chat to whoever is at the service point, and danders back to the caravan with a refill.
This probably explains my preference for fully serviced pitches!

Id be interested, if it wasnt too dear. That said, i know when we have been caning the water, and always check by looking in the top prior to major use such as showers. It doesnt do to run them dry, as this will eventually bugger your pump, as it carries on spinning when empty, even if the taps arent on.
On the gadget, i think one could be knocked up with a bit of clear tube similar to what they have on domestic oil tanks.
Just a thought, put something small but larger in diameter than the water hose that floats inside the Aquaroll to aid checking of water level, like a plastic milk bottle top.

I use an aqua roll ball valve & hose connected to the aqua roll and tap, leave the tap on and when I use water it refills
Correct me if I am wrong, however, that would only work if one is on a service pitch with access to its own water tap.
I am not keen on service pitches, and if there is a water tap near my pitch, it is usually a communal one and I cannot hog it!
