We're camping beginners and have been given a Campingaz Camping Chef stove but it doesn't have any instructions with it.

Does anyone know where we could either find some on the internet, or contact to obtain a copy?

Thanks in anticipation.

You dont really need instructions to operate it . Just push the knob in, turn and light the flame. Either by pressing the ignition button (if it has one ) or using a match or cigarette lighter. You'll soon work out which way is high and which way is low .

Or do you mean what you need to get connected up to the gas ?

You will need a rubber gas hose, approx 1m - 1.5 meter length and 2 jubillee clips to attach it.

You disconnect the regulator from the bottle when travelling, and turn the gas off at the regulator when not in use .

One on the cooker nozzle and the other end fixes onto the gas regulator nozzle. ( A little brass bit like a pipe with ridges )that sticks out of the cooker and one similar on the regulator.

dip the end of the hose in a cup of boiling water to soften it before pushing it onto the gas nozzle on the cooker and regulator.
the pipe needs to go ALL the way on , covering the nozzle completely, then tighten the jubilee clips around to secure in place.

You can use any gas cylinder with it, it doesn't have to be a campingaz brand cylinder. You could use calor gas for example. You can use blue butane gas , or red propane gas , or patio gas .

The size of cylinder you get will determine which regulator you need, they are different for different size bottles (cylinders) .

campingaz comes in smaller size cylinders, 907 being a commonly used size for campers, but calor gas is cheaper and you get more gas as the cylinders are bigger. the smallest size calor ones are around 4kg-4.5kg size.

Try to get a secondhand cylinder from the tip, (they are not supposed to give them out , but sometimes will for a fiver ) or ebay, carboot sales local paper etc.

any size calor bottle is okay, as they will exchange a large empty one for a smaller size one, and you just pay for the gas.

if you can't get a secondhand one you have to pay a deposit on the cylinder if you get one from a shop.

About £30 for calor and £45 for campingaz, plus the cost of the gas .
A campingaz 907 holds 2.7kg gas and a refill costs about £20.
a calor gas 4kg is about £15 for a refill .
They dont refill the cylinder , they exchange your empty one for a full one.
A full cylinder may last a full season if its just for cooking .

campingaz is also widely available on the continent , but calor gas is not.

Most camping shops sell gas hoses, jubilee clips and gas bottle regulators and will be able to advise you which regulator you need for your gas bottle .like these

Welcome to UKCS!!!

You don't need a manual now, just print beefysmum's post

I have been googling trying to find the manual for half an hour... cannot find one at all! Bad show for Campingaz not to have them on their site. Anyway, any other questions not answered by beefysmum's post please just ask and we'll do our best to help.

Thanks very much for the replies received and the warm welcome to UKCS :)

We were trying to puzzle out how to light the grill but have since mastered it!  Our other niggle was that we've read differing reviews about the stove.  Some people say you can use the burners and grill at the same time, and some say you can't.  We wondered what the manual said as we're not sure.  Is it that one won't work at the same time as the other, or will they both work simultaneously but just that it's a safety issue?  We tried Campingaz's website first and were surprised they didn't have the manual to download.

Thanks

I'll photocopy mine for you if you like. Mail me your address if you want me to.

You can use the grill at the same time as the hobs , but I think the the performance of the grill is reduced , so just takes longer to cook .

]the manual says you can use one or the other, but not the burners and the grill together previous post

if you click that link there is a post explaining why you should not use all at once

I think part of the problem is that the cannisters are low pressure, so to the expect it to feed two burners and the grill is a bit too much for it to handle, try it and see.

If you decide to go for calor (Cheaper anyway) you have the choice of butane or propane, I can't think of any advantage butane would have, but propane is better in cold situations as butane tends to freeze. See the thread on camping at christmas.

I think the brand Campingaz is now under the ownership of Coleman. Here are their contact details, they should be able to supply an original manual for your stove.

Hi stegzayr.

The Chef is a great little stove, we have been using that model for a couple of seasons now, we paid £20 for ours, car boot bargain that had never even been used, and later £10 for the specific campingaz carry bag lol, although the bag is quite handy for keeping it altogether when in transit, last year we added a Lidl Induction Hob, great bit of kit for £25 and packs away nice into an old laptop bag!.

Hi

Thanks everyone for your helpful advice - we are now sorted with a copy of the manual, courtesy of Deb Hill.

Sirmig - in answer to your query about the metal elbow, on our stove it is soldered on.  I think gas ones usually are.

Hi, I know this is dredging up a very old post, but does anyone have any info on what was written by sirmig?

I must have been gifted the same age stove, it's never been used, but the elbow from the cooker is galvanized metal, and just seems to push on with a tight fit. I'm presuming this is correct, but with the more modern versions a brass elbow is used with a different fitting method.

Any pointers would be great, cheers.

I have a Campingaz Camping Chef of unknown vintage that I was given, it's in bits at the moment being renovated as it was a bit mucky/rusty. The gas inlet differs from later versions in as much as there is a straight hose stem (NOT an elbow!) protruding directly out of the side from the end of the straight valve/regulator rail at the front of the stove, now this hose stem is a alloy casting (may be mistaken for galvanized, but is definitely not brass) and it indeed appears to be attached by some form of adhesive/sealant (there is a small amount of excess oozed from the joint), I suspect it's actually threaded with a thread lock/sealant adhesive, but the 3 valves are attached in the same manner. It's physically secure and gas tight, so I'll leave as is in my renovations.
