Hi there

I don't know which model Alko you have. I used to have this problem with my Frontera and the 2002 Alko. Thats the one with the "Knuckle" on the red handle. One solution I have seen [but not used] is to cut the knuckle off! I always stuck with the back up - door open - hitch up - close door routine.

However when the 2004 Alko came out I discovered that it was possible to lift thew handle vertical without opening the door so I had one these fitted and have had no problems since. And my Frontera is worse than some in this respect because it has the plastic colour coded wheel cover which sticks out a little more. One advantage I do have is that I use the Brink removable swan neck hitch which also protrudes more than a fixed ball.

I understand that Alko are currently testing a revised handle that will do for all 4x4 cars with mounted spare wheels so it might be worth hanging on a bit longer. Otherwise it is a question of putting up with the door routine or changing your bar and/or your hitch to a 2004/swan neck cobination.

Hope this helps

Old thread revived or what!!!

However as I now use a terrano complete with rear mounted spare in the way, we need a bit of synchronised team work to get the alko 3004 on.

Does anyone have any experience of the retro fit 4x4 handle particularly on a terrano or similar

I'd like to know it works before I shell out another £30+
