Just been onto Maplin and a replacement 6.4v battery for the Ring lantern is £5.99 plus p&p, then maybe a new bulb as well at £4 so I'm going to nip out to Lidl now and see if they have any of their £5.99 lanterns left. I could replace the battery in the Ring and then forget to keep charging it over the winter and have to buy another one next season so I think a lantern with disposable batteries makes sense for us.

Well I solved my problem today. Was going to have a walk on the beach with OH and the dog but it was hissing down so we headed for our local GreatOutdoors instead, as you do on a miserable day. Couldnt resist a Gelert 20 LED Lantern for £14.90 and 6 twin packs of D cells £1 per pack or 6 for £5. A good looking lantern in black and brushed steel, very robust with a carry handle and fold down hook. Just tried it in our understairs cupboard and the light is extremely bright. Very pleased with it.

I have a towsure rechargeable lamp and have just got a Gelert rechargeable lamp which is much brighter (strangely this comes with a remote control - though I haven't used it). Haven't had any issues with the towsure battery (purchased last year). Both do recommend charging/discharging every 3 months.
