Yes, but you have to get the ice packs and that means you're dependent on the campsite freezing them for you, the camp shop being open and so on.
oh, and does this 'liquid/gas' system mean fridges are a lot heavier or anything? are there any down sides to them?
They're more expensive. You can get a non electric cool box for under a tenner. Add a Peltier cooling device and you're up to about £30 and that gives you some independence from the camp shop.
But a fridge will be a lot more. At least £60 for a "table top" fridge of the type you might have at home (which will only run on mains electricty) and £130 or more for a 3-way fridge (which wont actually be as good a fridge as the £60 table top one but will work on gas as well as mains electricty and will run on 12V while you're driving along.)
