Problem solved. Used emery paper and it is now silent.

Thanks Jan,   Last time we camped I stopped twice on the motorway to check the hitch as I had a bit of swaying. Probably pushed the lever down first as you said. Will check next time to wind in the side knob then put the locking lever down.
