If you are with BT at home for your broadband then you are given free WIFI minutes you can use at a hotspot.   If i need to check email I just go into  hotel lobbys to log on whether I am staying there or not.

  I can't remember just how many free minutes you get, perhaps 400 a month which you can roll over but I know I have plenty minutes left.

We stayed at a site in Keswick recently who gave free wifi access. Castlerigg hall!

Also if its any help, this site shows a map of wifi hotspots anywhere in the UK.   THere are a lot of free wifi places out there.
