I think you need to consider what you want it for.  There are lots of alternative ways to acheive lots of things. e.g. cooking lighting, heating, keeping food cool all of which have their advantages/disadvantages and EHU is not always best/nicest, depending on your situation.

We have camped for years without EHU but have just got it this year, primarily because both of us are into photography.  My OH used to use an inverter to charge camera batteries but since both of us have got digital cameras it is much easier to use EHU as we can do both lots at once, especially as we need to charge the archos/laptop to store the photos on as well.   We try to avoid using the car as much as possible when we are away so using it to charge things isn't always convenient.  If it hadn't been for this we would probably wouldn't have bothered as the only other things we use it for are an electric coolbox and some lighting but have always used iceblocks and batteries before, although admittedly it isn't so convenient.

I expect we'll still use the iceblocks and invertor set up for shorter breaks and if we really fancy a site that doesn't have EHU.  We also used to go into pubs and ask them if we could charge batteries etc if we paid them for the electric which had the benefit of meaning you had to sit there eating or drinking for a certain amount of time.   Lots of campsites will charge stuff for you too. 

We have EHU, but only tend to use it if we are going away for 4days+. I must admit it is useful for things like boiling a kettle quickly and for the coolbox and if we are away on our own we can use it to watch some DVDs if the weather is bad.

Having said that we are away this weekend with friends and no ehu, but we're only going for 3 nights and in those circumstances I don't really miss it!

We camp with and without it - besides the coolbox I like to boil an electric kettle for washes/washing up when we stay on basic campsites that have no hot water.  I like my electric toaster as well.

Think about the sorts of camp sites that you will be staying on and what facilities you want.
